Traces : Ana Mendieta by Ana Mendieta( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 391 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"During her short career, Ana Mendieta (1948-85) created a body of work that was provocative and radically inventive. Using her own body, together with elemental materials - blood, fire, earth and water - she created visceral 'tableaus' and ephemeral 'earth-body' sculptures exploring life, death, rebirth and spiritual transformation. Born in Cuba, but sent to the US as a child, much of her art expresses the pain and rupture of cultural displacement and exile. In Mendieta's work the outline of her body is consumed by gunpowder, fireworks, or advancing waves, and ancient goddess-forms are shaped from sand, carved into rock, or incised into clay or onto leaves. The media are exceptionally diverse, but the images are consistently compelling, mysterious and poetic. Encompassing a wealth of drawings, photography and film, Ana Mendieta: Traces provides a comprehensive and illuminating overview of this highly influential artist's work. Essays by art historians, Julia Bryan-Wilson and Adrian Heathfield, as well as Stephanie Rosenthal, Chief Curator at Hayward Gallery, provide an array of new approaches to Mendieta's practice. This publication also includes a wide-ranging and highly illustrated anthology of never-before-seen material, including Mendieta's own notebooks, exhibition plans and correspondence, the result of unparalleled access to the Ana Mendieta Archive. Filled with new imagery, ephemera and scholarship, Ana Mendieta: Traces provides a comprehensive introduction to this major twentieth-century artist, as essential for Mendieta experts as for those coming to her work for the first time."--Publisher's description
Ideal and reality : the image of the body in 20th-century art from Bonnard to Warhol : works on paper( Book )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 304 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ideal and Reality - The Image of the Body in 20th-Century Art covers a broad segment of the history of art in our century. Its central concerns are the tradition of figural representation and the artist's approach to the image of the nude human body."--BOOK JACKET. "The exhibition provides not only a survey of the various distinctive approaches to the representation of the body in drawing and the many innovative advances beyond established solutions but also documents the erotic fascination with which artists have viewed the body. This fascination is evident in the early years of the century in powerful works by Klimt, Schiele, Rodin and Matisse, in which the drawing came to represent the immediate expression of erotic desire."--Jacket

George Condo : one hundred women by George Condo( Book )

3 editions published in 2005 in English and German and held by 178 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"American painter George Condo, who was born in New Hampshire in 1957, has occupied a prominent position in the Western art scene from Cologne to New York for more than twenty years. He regularly succeeds in surprising viewers with his grotesque, often tradition-conscious, and almost classically Surrealistic paintings. Condo's own models and partners in dialogue range from Goya and Velazqaez to Picasso and Warhol, in whose Factory he earned this living for a brief period in the early eighties. Along with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Julian Schnabel, he was instrumental in the international revival of painting after 1982. This retrospective publication focuses on Condo's favorite subject: women. Featuring some fifty paintings, forty drawings, and five sculptures, the book presents a motif that appears in various forms in his art - in nudes, portraits, and art-historical collages. Apart from Picasso and Mattise, no other twentieth-century artist has dealt with this theme as intensely and imaginatively as George Condo."--Jacket
Les grands spectacles : 120 Jahre Kunst und Massenkultur = 120 years of art and mass culture by Agnes Husslein-Arco( Book )

3 editions published in 2005 in German and held by 146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"On the tendency to turn everything into an event. An exploration of the spectacle in modern and contemporary art. Even though the so-called fun society was declared over and done with a while ago, the guidelines of event culture are still valid. Ever more insistently, artists are forced to conceive their exhibitions as events, to use their works as material for large affairs aimed at the masses. This highly current publication, featuring works by over one hundred artists, shows how art has understood the social significance of the sensational or tragic over the past 120 years, and explored, expanded, altered or destroyed the stuff of which spectacles are made. It begins with the invention of film at the end of the nineteenth century, moves on to the modernization and expansion of mass media after World War II, and finally leads to the situation art finds itself in at the beginning of the new millennium, where every little occasion is required to display its theatrical qualities, and every intimate movement of the individual can become entertainment for the masses. The featured artists (selection): Antonin Artaud, Matthew Barney, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Marcel Duchamp, Marlene Dumas, James Ensor, Nan Goldin, Richard Hamilton, Teresa Hubbard und Alexander Birchler, Martin Kippenberger, Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama, Michael Light, E.-J. Marey, Paul McCarthy + Jason Rhoades, Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha, Jean Tinguely, Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol" (résumé éditeur)
