Ethnic minority media : an international perspective by Stephen Harold Riggins( )

19 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,266 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Do minority media contribute to ethnic cohesion and cultural maintenance? Or do ethnic media encourage assimilation into the dominant culture by espousing that culture's products, images, and values? Ethnic Minority Media explores these issues by providing a broad international sampling of case studies that span a variety of ethnic minorities and countries. Each case study presents the different cultural, political, and economic conditions that figure prominently in media's role in ethnic survival or demise. The contributors, many of them internationally regarded journalists, primarily study the print and broadcast media that minorities have established for their communities. They focus on previously neglected minority media in the United States (Hispanic and Native media), Great Britain (Welsh), Ireland (Irish), Canada (Native), Australia (Aboriginal), Israel (Roumanian), France (Occitan and Basque), Greenland (Inuit), Chile (Native), and Algeria (Berber). They analyze these phenomena on many levels, defining crucial terms, considering different audiences, and contrasting ethnic with mainstream media." "Those interested in the related areas of international media performance, assimilation, ethnic media, communication, and minorities will find Ethnic Minority Media to be essential reading. Additionally, both teachers and policymakers will benefit from the theory, case studies, and historical analyses."--Jacket

The language and politics of exclusion : others in discourse by Stephen Harold Riggins( Book )

19 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 491 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This new volume brings together articles that apply critical discourse analysis to texts and speech that contribute to the marginalization of minority groups. Studying both the fine details of language use and the political values implicated by word choice, the contributors examine how an "us versus them" division is played out in a wide array of cultural settings. Among the groups considered are immigrants in Western Europe, African Americans, African Canadians, Mexican Natives, Jews in Austria, and Muslims in Europe and North America. Examples of everyday speech through which prejudice is conveyed include advertising, parliamentary debate, travel literature, newspaper articles, the law, autobiography, and even classroom discourse. Collectively, the chapters make a strong and original case for the value of linguistic perspective in the study of prejudice and social inequity. By providing an in-depth look at the ways in which discourse can marginalize others, The Language and Politics of Exclusion should prove useful to scholars and to students in communication, sociology, journalism, and linguistics

The pleasures of time : two men, a life by Stephen Harold Riggins( Book )

4 editions published between 2000 and 2009 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

American-born Stephen Harold Riggins and French-born Paul Bouissac have been partners for over thirty years. This book is the story of their complex and fascinating relationship -- set in Paris, Toronto, Newfoundland and Indiana, with a cast of characters including celebrated critics Northrop Frye, Michel Foucault, Hélene Cixous and Claude Lévi-Strauss -- but it is also very much more. Spanning over most of the past century, The Pleasures of Time is an important work of cultural studies and intellectual history, tracing the growth of a committed gay relationship at the same time as it charts important cultural and intellectual trends. For example, Paul Bouissac, the subject of this loving memoir, is one of the world's foremost authorities on circus, as well as a member of the Nouveau Roman literary movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Author Stephen Harold Riggins, who bases the book on the diaries he has kept since the early 1970s, recreates in expert sepia tones the cafés of Paris, his home state of Indiana and rural country circuses of 1960s southern Ontario among other locales

Creating a university : the Newfoundland experience( Book )

3 editions published in 2019 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Creating a University is a collection of short essays by more than 30 former faculty and staff of Memorial University--a series of "MUNographies,"--about personal and professional experiences working at Newfoundland's only university. It is something of a Memorial University family reunion, without a drunken uncle. In the years covered by this volume, primarily 1950 to 1990, few Memorial faculty were Canadians, let alone Newfoundlanders. These "come from aways" arrived in the middle of a post-colonial cultural renaissance, which saw a movement toward new interdisciplinary studies, and laid the groundwork for many of the programs and courses that are offered at the University today."--
