"Cree, a member of the Algonquian family of languages, is the most widely spoken native language in Canada. Although there are different dialects, Cree is recognizably the same language whether on the western plains, in the northern woodlands or on the shores of James Bay. Based on Swampy Cree (N-Dialect) and Moose Cree (L-Dialect) spoken around James Bay, C. Douglas Ellis's Spoken Cree has become the authoritative work on teaching Cree since its original release in 1962." "Spoken Cree, Level I is the introductory volume of a newly revised three-level Cree language course. This first level develops a familiarity with typical day-to-day situations and introduces the three orders of the Cree verb: independent, imperative and conjunct. Material relevant to medicine, business, religion and teaching is introduced throughout the text. The Cree syllabary is introduced in the final chapter of Level I. Level II and a completely new Level III will build further control of the language. A set of recordings is also available to aid the learner."--BOOK JACKET

Spoken Cree = Ê-ililîmonâniwahk : level II, west coast of James Bay by C. D Ellis( )

Ellis (linguistics and applied language studies, Carleton U., Ottawa) presents a revised edition of the intermediate volume of his three-level Cree language course, originally released in 1963. Building on the fundamentals covered in Spoken Cree, Level I, the text explores the language in the cultural context of a typical northern Cree village. Coverage includes more complex grammatical concepts, including modes, tenses and submodes of the conjunct order; more advanced processes of composition and derivation; and the various forms of the preterit, both independent and conjunct. Extensive use of the syllabary is introduced, with exercises in syllabic writing. The second-level text no longer contains the full glossary; a glossary for all three levels will be appended to Spoken Cree, Level III. Distributed by Michigan State U. Press.
