Stiff differential systems by Ralph A Willoughby( Book )

5 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 343 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The papers in these proceedings were presented at an International Symposium on Stiff Differential Systems, which was held at the Hotel Quellenhof, Wildbad, Federal Republic of Germany, October 4-6, 1973. The sumposium was organized by IBM Germany and sponsored by the IBM World Trade Corporation. On behalf of all the participants we wish to express our appreciation to the sponsors and organizers for their generous support, particularly to Dr. G. HUbner, representing Scientific Relations, IBM Germany, and Dr. G. Kozak, representing IBM World Trade Headquarters, New York. The purpose of the conference was to provide an intensive treatment of all apsects of a difficult problem class, stiff differential systems. Some major fields of interest of attendees and contributors are: 1) Modeling and problem solving in scientific and technological applications, 2) Qualitative theory of stiff systems, 3) Numerical Analysis, including design, validation, and comparison of algorithms, as well as error and stability analysis, and 4) Computer Science, in particular problem-oriented programming languages, program packages, and applications-oriented computer architecture

Specification and utilization of a transformational grammar by Peter S Rosenbaum( Book )

4 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 23 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The report summarizes research carried out in three areas of computational linguistics. These are (1) the design and development of a transformational grammar for a subset of grammatical sentences in English; (2) the implementation of this grammar in terms of a sentence synthesizing program written in LISP 1.5; and (3) the use of sentence synthesizing programs for transformational grammars generally

Quantitative properties of delta channel networks by J. Samuel Smart( Book )

2 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Some simple procedures are developed for studying the topologic and geometric properties of delta distributary systems. A delta channel network has three kinds of vertices (forks, junctions, and outlets) and six kinds of links, each corresponding to one of the six possible combinations of upstream and downstream vertices. Various functions of the vertex and link numbers may be used to specify the topologic properties of the network. A particularly useful function is the recombination factor, or ratio of number of junctions to number of forks. This ratio varies from zero from networks with no recombination to unify for braided streams. A detailed topologic study of the networks of five natural deltas (Colville, Irrawaddy, Yukon, Niger, and Parana) shows recombination factors ranging from 0.5 to 0.85. The frequency of different kinds of links can be explained reasonably well be a simple model that assumes random connection of vertices. The link lengths for a given network appear to belong to a common distribution and to depend relatively little on location with respect to the coast. The results on the Parana suggest that it should be considered as two deltas in tandem, each with its characteristic recombination factor

Studies in automatic language processing by David Lieberman( Book )

1 edition published in 1965 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The objective of the work is the development of a computerized linguistic basis for application to practical and theoretical problems in automatic language processing. The three main parts of work are: (1) a formalism for expressing grammatical information, (2) a sentence analysis procedure based on the formalism, and (3) a grammar of English expressed in terms of the formalism, but motivated by transformational theory. A detailed description of the processing of a sample sentence is given. Some new schemes, possessing certain desirable properties, for organizing records with binary valued attributes were defined. It was shown that it is possible to construct these filing schemes using finite geometries. The search time for query involving any attributes for these filing schemes based on finite geometries is very small in comparison with existing filing schemes. Moreover, the search time does not depend on the number of records. The problem of updating is also quite simple. (Author)
Behavioral issues in the use of interactive systems by Lance A Miller( Book )

2 editions published in 1976 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper identifies behavioral issues related to the use of interactive computers primarily by persons who are not computer professionals, so-called 'general users.' This is not an exhaustive literature survey but instead provides: (1) a structure for discussing issues of interactive computing, and (2) the authors' best estimate of importance behavioral problems, with suggestions for solutions. The discussion is limited to this paper to general issues which do not take into account the user's particular task. The two major topics are System Characteristics (performance, facilities, and on-line information), and Interface Characteristics (dialogue style, displays and graphics, other input/output media)
PHONON INTERACTIONS IN CRYSTALS( Book )

6 editions published between 1963 and 1966 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The thermal decay times of thin indium films evaporated on sapphire and quartz single crystal substrates have been measured over a range of temperatures which, with earlier measurements, now extends from 4-300 K. At the higher temperatures the results were found to be in good qualitative agreement with the predictions of the thermal diffusion theory of heat transport, although there were some quantitative discrepancies. A power series for the free energy of a displacive ferroelectric is derived in the linear anharmonic approximation. This free energy is expressed in terms of a complete set of microscopic order parameters which determine the ionic displacements in the ferroelectric transition. In general this complete set of microscopic order parameters is larger than the set of order parameters used in the phenomenological free energy of Devonshire. However, for those ferroelectric crystals which are characterized by only one soyt optical branch this larger set may be reduced to the same as used by Devonshire. Such a reduction is explicitly carried out for the perovskite structure and the resulting expression is the same as that derived phenomenologically by Devonshire with the coefficients expressed in terms of microscopic lattice parameters

Data traffic reduction schemes for Cholesky factorization on asynchronous multiprocessor systems by Vijay K Naik( Book )

2 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Communication requirements of Cholesky factorization of defense and sparse symmetric, positive definite matrices are analyzed. The communication requirement is characterized by the data traffic generated on multiprocessor systems with local and shared memory. Lower bound proofs are given. Partitioning schemes that are variations of block assignment scheme are described and it is shown that the data traffic generated by these schemes are asymptotically optimal. Itis shown that the block based partitioning schemes allow a better utilization of the data accessed from shared memory and thus reduce the data traffic than those based on column-wise wrap around assignment scheme. Study of the Physics of Insulating Films as Related to the Reliability of Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (MOS) Devices( Book )

4 editions published between 1977 and 1982 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report covers work on enhanced electron injection into SiO2, studies of limitations on the number of useful write/erase cycles for EAROS devices due to electron trapping in the SiO2, the physics and design of EAROS devices using Si-rich SiO2 charge injectors, and the capture and release of electrons on Na(+)-related sites in SiO2. An automatic system is described for making write/erase cycling measurements of EAROS devices. (Author)
