A theory of literary production by Pierre Macherey ( Book )
29 editions published between 1966 and 2012 in English and held by 837 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Who is more important: the reader, or the writer? Originally published in French in 1966, Pierre Macherey's first and most famous work, "A Theory of Literary Production" dared to challenge perceived wisdom, and quickly established him as a pivotal figure in literary theory. In this provocative work, Macherey puts the focus as much on the reader as the writer, stating that the very act of reading is a form of production in its own right, generating interpretation and meanings which are beyond the control of the author. Part of the birth of a whole new branch of post-structuralist theory, Macherey's work also influenced a new generation of critics among them Jacques Derrida, his contemporary, and Terry Eagleton. His ideas have also led some observers to claim that he announced the death of the author fully two years before Roland Barthes' famous essay

Hegel or Spinoza by Pierre Macherey ( )
7 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 408 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Hegel or Spinoza is the first English-language translation of the modern classic Hegel ou Spinoza. Published in French in 1979, it has been widely influential, particularly in the work of the philosophers Alain Badiou, Antonio Negri, and Gilles Deleuze. Hegel or Spinoza is a surgically precise interrogation of the points of misreading of Spinoza by Hegel. Pierre Macherey explains the necessity of Hegel's misreading in the kernel of thought that is "indigestible" for Hegel, which makes the Spinozist system move in a way that Hegel cannot grasp. In doing so, Macherey exposes the limited and situ

Hegel ou Spinoza by Pierre Macherey ( Book )

-- Back cover

In a Materialst Way ranges over Macherey's writings on philosophy and theory, critiques of the work of major figures in contemporary French thought such as Lacan, Foucoult and Canguilhem, and analyses of the work of Spinoza. Proust : entre littérature et philosophie by Pierre Macherey ( Book )
4 editions published in 2013 in French and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
