In the most controversial of Borzage's now unfashionable tales of spiritual redemption through love and adversity, Gable is a convict who implicates 'dance hostess' Crawford in his attempted escape from a penal colony, causing her expulsion from the settlement. They face the hardship of a trek through the jungle following a subsequent group breakout. The carnality of Gable and Crawford's initial attraction (which deepens into redeeming love) was to be mitigated by role of the virtuous Christian in the novel elevated to Christ-like proportions in the film. Ironically, this only provoked the Legion of Decency which found the film to be blasphemous. Even after cuts it remained banned in some cities

Mandalay: ... A Russian refugee seeks revenge upon the ex-lover who sold her into slavery. Massacre: ...
