Revised and updated to incorporate the work of the late 1980s and early 1990s, this book presents the latest examples of contemporary inventiveness. Recent trends are given a special section of their own
Design since 1945 by Peter Dormer( Book )

39 editions published between 1968 and 2003 in 4 languages and held by 879 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The essential shape, form and structure of some objects in our daily lives may have been fixed many generations ago, but design and designers have now been moved center stage by the varied demands of a society that in less than half a century has gone from the restless search for the new throw-away consumerism to a postmodernist recycling of ideas - and now, Green recycling of materials. Companies use design systematically to plan their manufacturing, shape their marketing and make their products more attractive, while many designers have sought to raise the status of their activity to that of an art form and even - like Ettore Sottsass - to see it as "a way of discussing life". Dormer questions orthodoxies, defines the contexts within which designers work, and aims to cover the wide range of post-war activity, including industrial and product design, graphics, furniture, textiles, kitchen utensils and tableware
The meanings of modern design : towards the twenty-first century by Peter Dormer( Book )

23 editions published between 1990 and 1993 in English and held by 770 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dormer analyzes the meanings of design in consumer durable goods, such as hair dryers and electric appliances; crafts, such as handmade pots, textiles, and jewerly; and high-design artifacts. He covers four themes: the economic context of design production; the role of new technology in changing style; the relationship among making, consuming, and individual self-satisfaction; and the need to set design in the context of society's values of health and safety. He discusses the differences between design and engineering, the effects of new materials on styling, symbolism and meaning in product style, the role of symbolism in marketing, valuing the handmade, and conservation and environmental concerns. Jewelry of our time : art, ornament, and obsession by Helen Williams Drutt( Book )

21 editions published in 1995 in 4 languages and held by 450 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jewelry has undergone an unprecedented revolution in recent decades. Personal adornment has always attracted wide interest, but since the 1960s jewelry has found fresh inspiration. Influences from other arts, the use of surprising materials and the desire to make an individual statement or even to tell a story, have all combined to create a new and exciting movement. The book has three essential elements. Firstly, an unrivalled display of the jewelry itself, making use of visually innovative special photography: hundreds of colour photographs provide a dazzling array of rich and imaginative work, as well as an unsurpassed reference document for contemporary jewelry. Secondly, an equally innovative critical history, tracing the first challenges to traditional forms of jewelry, but focusing on the inspired use of new materials, new processes, new tools and new ideas since 1960. And finally, an important reference section, including detailed biographies of over a hundred makers; an extended bibliography; and a comprehensive chronology of exhibitions and events held in public museums throughout the world. This book is an essential work of reference for collectors, artists, curators and students of twentieth-century art, craft and jewelry

Concrete and open skies : architecture at the University of East Anglia, 1962-2000 by Peter Dormer( Book )

7 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 74 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The University of East Anglia in Norwich was one of the group of seven new universities set up in the United Kingdom in the 1960s in a wave of optimism. The university set out to embody this optimism in an entirely new kind of campus design and, as patron, has engaged some of the most able and distinguished architects of the second half of the twentieth century to work for it: Lasdun, Feilden, Luckhurst, then Foster (the Sainsbury Centre), Miller and, mostrecently, Mather. The authors record, illustrate and discuss the particular circumstances of the university's commissioning of architects to develop buildings on the main campus of Norwich, from the sophisticated but gentle architecture of the 1990s to the architectural heroism and brutalism of the 1960s and 1970s, explaining the political and financial constraints which caused new methods of construction and changes in the choice of design and building materials as the plans for the development of the University unfolded
