Rembrandt is revered not only as a painter, but as a supreme master of drawing and etching as well. His work in etching spanned most of his career and embraced the wide range of subjects he pursued in his painting: portraits, landscapes, biblical scenes, pictures with allegorical and mythological themes, and more. This comprehensive collection contains Rembrandt's complete etchings -- over 300 works -- shown in their original size. They have been reproduced directly from a rare collection famed for its pristine condition, fresh, clean impressions, rich contrasts, and brilliant printing. Among the etchings included are: Self portrait drawing at a window (1648); Abraham's sacrifice (1655); Christ preaching ["The undered-guilder print"] (ca. 1643-49); Christ crucified between the two thieves ["The three crosses"] (1653); The return of the prodigal son (1636); The three trees (1643); Faust (ca. 1652); Jan Six (1647); The great Jewish bride (1635); The strolling musicians (ca. 1635). The etchings are reproduced in their actual size rather than from reduced photographs, which can depart significantly in quality from the originals. Fourteen oversize etchings, reproduced in reduction inside the book, are also included at full size on three sheets placed in a pocket at the back of the book. This handsome volume is filled with information critical to fully appreciating the extraordinary images it contains. Detailed captions point out features of special interest and provide vital information such as title, signature, date, collection, Bartsch number, state of impression reproduced, and total number of states. Also included are a chronology of Rembrandt's life and etchings, a discussion of the technique of etching in his time, and an excellent bibliography. Art lovers, scholars, students of etching, and anyone with an interest in Rembrandt and his work will find in this beautiful book a rare and exciting visual experience. --! From back cover

"In spite of his longstanding popularity, authoritative accounts of Rembrandt's life and work have been difficult to compile, and there has long been debate over the precise number of works that can be absolutely attributed to the great master. Distilling centuries of debate into a single volume is no small task, but Gary Schwartz provides a completely accessible overview of the central controversies and mysteries surrounding Rembrandt and his masterpieces. In addition, Schwartz addresses the more particular aspects of Rembrandt scholarship: the painter's personal relationships; his finances; his artistic influences; his choice of subject matter; his techniques."--BOOK JACKET

Emotions : pain and pleasure in Dutch painting of the Golden Age by Gary Schwartz( Book )

6 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 151 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fear, sadness, surprise, anger, lust and love - virtually nothing was more important in the paintings ofthe Golden Age than convincingly depicting human emotions. In this publication, the Frans Hals Museum and Rembrandt expert Gary Schwartz present a selection of masterpieces in which these emotions are sublimely portrayed. According to seventeenth-century connoisseurs, the beauty of a painting was not even half as important as the passions that could be seen in that painting; they formed the soul of the work. Painters such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Maerten van Heemskerck and Cornelis van Haarlem were masters at depicting a range of emotions. Their works are presented in a new context - the emotional life - and with a focus on the flourishing scientific study of emotions in our own time. Emotions will be published in conjunction with the first exhibition in the Netherlands to present this essential component of painting. Exhibition: Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem, the Netherlands (11.10.2014-15.02.2015)

Meet Rembrandt : life and work of the master painter by Gary Schwartz( Book )

13 editions published between 2009 and 2011 in English and Dutch and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Rembrandt was a painter and draftsman of undisputed genius, but what was he like as a person? The mystery of the moody and inspired Rembrandt continues to fascinate. Gary Schwartz tells the story of Rembrandt the man, artist, and legend in lively and accessible language. He introduces us to the people who inspired the artist: patrons, wives, and lovers, and his son Titus, who died tragically young. And Schwartz recounts the sorrowful and impoverished circumstances of the artist’s last years. Rembrandt’s fascinating art remains, enriching the biographical details of his life through its subject matter and its development from the polished sophistication of his early years in Amsterdam to the deep soul-searching of the late works."--Publisher description
Changing perspectives : dealing with globalisation in the presentation and collection of contemporary art by Mariska ter Horst( Book )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 99 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Globalization has hit the art world as well as the economy and has changed perspectives up and down the line: artists, art markets, museums, academics, art critics and curators are being forced to revise their thinking and practice. Institutions for art, culture and history are in search of new ways to maintain their relevance in rapidly transforming and increasingly culturally diverse societies. These issues form the subject of the essays in this volume. While the collection is itself a product of collaboration among various institutions in the Netherlands, the questions and ideas posed in the book have bearing on similar developments in other Western countries, where institutions are likewise struggling to deal with changing situations. Changing Perspectives, with critical essays by experts from various disciplines, hopes to inspire the reader to develop his own position in the discourse on global art
