Postcolonialism : an historical introduction by Robert Young ( Book )
50 editions published between 1998 and 2012 in English and held by 1,566 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book is quite unlike any other introduction to postcolonialism. Robert Young examines the political, social, and cultural after-effects of decolonization by presenting situations, experiences, and testimony rather than examining the abstract theory. He situates the debate in a wide cultural context discussing its importance as an historical condition, using examples such as the status of aboriginal people, of those dispossessed from their land, Algerian rai music, postcolonial feminism, and global social and ecological movements. Above all, Young argues that postcolonialism offers a political philosophy of activism that contests the current situation of global inequality, which in a new way continues the anti-colonial struggles of the past."--BOOK JACKET

Immigrant settlement policy in Canadian municipalities by Robert Young ( )
3 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 736 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Drawing on a great many in-depth interviews with government officials and front-line workers, contributors provide a comparative assessment of approaches to immigrant settlement in nineteen Canadian municipalities. This is complemented by a discussion of the federal government's role in this policy field, and by a comprehensive introduction and conclusion, which ground the book historically and thematically, synthesize its key findings, and provide recommendations for addressing the challenges related to intergovernmental cooperation, settlement service delivery, and overall immigrant outcomes. Individual chapters examine the mechanics of public policy-making but also tell a story about diverse and innovative approaches to immigrant settlement in Canada's towns and cities, about gaps and problems in the system, and about the ways in which governments and communities are working together to facilitate integration."--Pub. desc
Sites of governance multilevel governance and policy making in Canada's big cities ( )
2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 729 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Policies forged by all levels of government affect the lives of urban residents. Contributors to this volume explore how intergovernmental relations shape urban policies and how various social forces are involved in--or excluded from--the policy process. Focusing on diverse policy fields including emergency planning, image-building, immigrant settlement, infrastructure, federal property, and urban Aboriginal policy, Sites of Governance presents detailed studies of the largest city in each of Canada's provinces. Drawing on extensive documentary research and hundreds of interviews, contributors offer rich, nuanced analyses and a wealth of policy cases, ranging from preparation for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics to the development of innovative immigrant settlement programming in Winnipeg. Dominant themes include the importance of resources and formal jurisdiction in multilevel policy making, and the struggle for influence between business interests and other social forces. Essential reading for anyone concerned with the quality of urban life in Canada, Sites of Governance offers important insights about how multilevel governance works in Canadian cities."--Publisher's website

In 1961 Robert Young and Michael Roemer made a film about Cortile Cascino, the worst slum in Palermo, Sicily. Thirty years later Young's son, Andrew, and Susan Todd returned to Palermo to find the slum gone but not the social problems. The new film, cross-cutting frequently between 1961 and 1991, centres on Angela now separated from her husband after years of mistreatment. He is chronically unemployed and a rabid monarchist. By implication the film suggests how the Mafia gains its strength at the grass-roots
