"America's Health Care Safety Net explains how competition and issues in today's health care marketplace are posing major challenges to continued access to care for America's poor and uninsured. At a time when policymakers and providers are urgently seeking guidance, this book suggests concrete strategies that are at our disposal for maintaining the viability of the safety net - suggestions that carry with them innovative approaches to building public attention, developing better tools for tracking the problem, and designing effective interventions." "This book provides a comprehensive assessment of how safety net providers are being challenged by and responding to a more cost-conscious, price-oriented, competitive health care market."--Jacket

"Improving the Medicare Market examines how to give Medicare beneficiaries the same choice of health plan options enjoyed in the private sector - yet protect them as consumers and patients. This book recommends approaches to ensuring accountability and informed purchasing for Medicare beneficiaries in an environment of broader choice and managed care. It examines how the government should evaluate and approve plans, what role the traditional Medicare program should play, how to help the elderly understand and fairly compare their options, and how to develop the necessary guidelines regarding enrollment, marketing, and grievance procedures."--Jacket

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Special Report Number One. the Foundation's Minority Medical Training Programs by Marion Ein Lewin( Book )

1 edition published in 1987 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Trends in minority representation in health professions and efforts to expand opportunity are discussed, and information on minority medical training programs of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is provided. During the mid-1960s to mid-1970s, public and private sector programs promoted minority recruitment, admissions, and retention policies for medical schools. From the mid-1970s onward, there has been a loss of momentum in efforts to increase ethnic diversity among medical students. Ways to increase the qualifications and size of the minority applicant pool for medical schools for the 1990s are addressed, including: improving academic skills and scores on the Medical College Admission Test, identifying potential physicians, providing role models and mentors, and providing financial aid. Training provided to blacks by the historically black colleges and medical schools is considered, along with the provision of health care to minorities. Types of programs funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation are identified, as are the minority or nonminority disadvantaged groups served and participating schools for each program. Case studies of four minority individuals are presented, along with information on minorities in law and engineering. (Sw)
