The international provision and supply of publications by Maurice Bernard Line( Book )

14 editions published between 1981 and 1983 in English and Czech and held by 72 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As part of a Universal Availability of Publications (uap) program, this report describes the current situation in international interlending and possible future models. From a review of literature and statistics previously collected, and a 1979 study of 15 international supply centers, it is concluded that international loan demand is increasing rapidly and that satisfaction rates and speed of response vary greatly. Secondly, two further studies are described which evaluate the extent to which distance affects speed of supply in international loans. It is reported that in 1979/80 no significant difference was found between supply time from India to five other Asian countries, and supply time from the British Library Lending Division to the same Asian countries. Based on data collected in the above studies, a discussion of factors relevant to the planning of international availability is presented. The components and requirements of an international supply system, photocopying of materials, cost recovery, barriers to international availability, and the effect of technological development on international lending are among the factors considered. Finally, several possible patterns of international availability are identified and evaluated, including worldwide, regional, national, and cooperative interlending models. A major distinction is made between copiable and non-copiable materials in these models of international availability. (Esr)
National interlending systems : a comparative study of existing systems and possible models by Maurice Bernard Line( Book )

2 editions published between 1978 and 1980 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work evaluates current interlending practice and various models of interlending provision among participants in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. It outlines the elements necessary in an interlending system and assesses the impact of technology on interlending. Factors relevant to the design, and criteria for judging the effectiveness of interlending systems are presented. Current practices are summarized as far as possible, and in the light of such information, potential basic and combined models are suggested. Factors telling against efficient national interlending systems are enumerated and the relationships between national interlending systems and other elements requiring national policy decision making are identified. The mechanics of interlending are also briefly considered. On the basis of these findings, conclusions are drawn and further studies are recommended. A part of the study describes interlending practices of each of 43 countries and national groups. The reprint of a paper on principles of national interlending systems and a bibliography of 309 citations are included. (Author/RAA)
