Union pensions were based on the military service unit of the veteran, so this index can be used to trace the movement of men who served in Arkansas units, then moved to other parts of the county after the war. Death dates/places are listed for nearly 1/3 of the veterans. Earliest application year for invalid, widow, contesting widow, minor, mother, father, etc. pension is listed. The book includes sample records and information to order more material. Nearly 80% of Union soldiers had some type of pension application filed based on their service
