Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) is a promising and innovative technology for high efficiency destruction of toxic military wastes. However, realization of the full commercial potential of this technology requires better understanding of several important chemical and physical phenomena, e.g. oxidation kinetics and mechanisms, and phase separations leading to solid salt formation, as well as fluid mixing, dispersion, corrosion and erosion of materials, and kinetics of potentially transport-limited chemical reactions together with synthesis of that understanding into models and simulation platforms for predicting the performances of SCWO reactors and SCWO process flowsheets. The overall goal of this URI program is to contribute new data, models and simulations responding to these needs. Specific objective are to: (1) measure and correlate oxidation rates of model and simulant compounds, (2) measure ask nucleation and precipitation rates, (3) model phase separations and elementary reaction kinetics, (4) develop techniques for evaluating and monitoring the corrosion resistance of reactor materials and (5) develop reactor models and process flowsheet simulations for SCWO of military wastes. Development of improved diagnostics for SCW experiments has emerged as an important corollary objective. This report summarizes results of MIT studies to these ends for the period July 1, 1992 - June 30, 1998
