The theological tractates by Boethius( Book )

Boethius (Boetius) - Anicius Manlius Severinus - c.480-524 A.D., Roman statesman and philosopher, was son of Flavius Manlius Boetius, after whose death he was looked after by several men, especially Memmius Symmachus. He married Symmachuss daughter, Rusticiana, by whom he had two sons. All three men rose to high honours under Theodoric the Ostrogoth, but Boethius fell from favour, was tried for treason, wrongly condemned and imprisoned at Ticinum (Pavia), where he wrote his renowned De Consolatione Philosophiae, until he was put to death in 524, to the great remorse of Theodoric. Boethius was revered as if he were a Saint and his bones were removed in 996 to the Church of S. Pietro in Ciel d Oro, and later to the Cathedral. The tower in Pavia where he was imprisoned is still venerated. Boethius was author of Latin translations of Aristotle, commentaries on various philosophical works, of original works on logic, of five books on music (for long a text-book in the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge), and other works. His De Consolatione Philosophiae is the last example of purely literary Latin of ancient times - a mingling of alternate dialogue and poems. We include also the Theological Tractates in this volume

Evolution by Rémy Collin( Book )

3 editions published in 1959 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Evolution, the theory that transformed biology and science in general, has been at the centre of scientific argument and debate for the last hundred years. The author treats evolution in its broadest aspect, and then discusses the complicated theories dealing with the origin of the cosmos, living things and finally Man. Distinguishing between scientific and metaphysical explanations, he notes the tendency of so many present-day scientists to become "amateur metaphysicians". He also distinguishes between what is known and what is conjectured. With these distinctions clearly maintained throughout the work, the reader is in a position to form his own conclusions
Medieval Christian philosophy by Philippe Delhaye( Book )

3 editions published in 1960 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Who were the mean that created the great systems of Christian philosophy in the Middle Ages? How did their thoughts and methods differ from the philosophers who preceded and followed them in history? The author answers these questions by describing the men and outlining the particular greatness that constitutes medieval Christian philosophy. He shows the influence of the ancient Greek and Roman philosophers, of the Jewish and Arabian thikers, and of the religious revelations and doctrines to which the Christian philosophers were dedicated. In all this volume presents a handy, compact outline of the scholastics and their religious philosophy

Between the eighth and third centuries B.C, the religions of the early inhabitants of Greece and Rome underwent a profound change, due to the religious beliefs brought from the East by the Indo-European hordes. This book traces the separate evolution of those religious beliefs among the Greeks and Romans, and their ultimate fusion in a universal Greco-Roman religion
Science and religion by Paul Chauchard( Book )

2 editions published in 1962 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the Renaissance on, there have been recurrent conflicts between science and religion, whether the science was the new astronomy of the seventeenth century or biological evolution in the nineteenth. The author here discusses the misunderstandings resulting from the misuse of science against religion, and equally unbalanced reactions found in atheistic agnosticism and Christian fideism. He proposes a reconciliation of science and religion, based on recognition of the immanence of God in the phenomenal world
