In the forest of Fontainebleau : painters and photographers from Corot to Monet by Kimberly Jones ( Book )
6 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 470 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The Forest of Fontainebleau, located about 50 miles southeast of Paris, held a singular place in 19th-century art. Variously called "savage," "wild," "romantic," and "beautiful" by visitors, Fontainebleau's topography was viewed in many ways that reflected the sensibilities of the time. This is the first English-language publication to examine the significance of the region to the plein-air tradition in France. The book highlights four pivotal figures in the evolution of landscape painting: Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, The;odore Rousseau, Jean-François Millet, and Claude Monet. It integrates into this history the photographers who worked at Fontainebleau, including Eugène Cuvelier and Gustave Le Gray, and explores the role the forest played in the development of early photography. It also considers the reception of paintings of Fontainebleau at the Salons and the influence of Fontainebleau on the advent of Impressionism." http://www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0828/2007044350-d.html

Monet and the Seine : impressions of a river by Helga Kessler-Aurisch ( Book )
3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"During his career, French artist Claude Monet (1840-1926) used the Seine as his testing ground for documenting on canvas the transformative effects of light and atmosphere. He produced many ethereal, evocative, and poetic paintings of the meandering river, which remained his favorite subject and also provided solace throughout his life. This beautiful book brings together fifty of Monet's most glorious paintings of the Seine, from the early works focusing on Argenteuil, Le Havre, and Paris, to the works on Lavacourt and Ve;theuil, and culminating with the stunningly beautiful works that make up the acclaimed series Mornings on the Seine, which depicts an intimate stretch of the Seine near Giverny. These paintings not only offer special glimpses into Monet's creative process but also introduce the concept of the series-a concept that would influence the art of future generations. Monet and the Seine features gorgeously reproduced images and engaging essays by four distinguished scholars. "--

Liebermann's paintings of his garden on Wannsee, Corinth's Walchensee landscapes and Slevogt's Palatinate landscapes painted at Godramstein and Neukastel are world-famous. However, exotic or less well known works such as the paintings Slevogt did in Egypt and Corinth's early landscapes from his Munich days are included in this publication. The catalogue provides a concentrated focus on the landscape paintings of the three great German Impressionists. Accompanying essays elucidate their switch to landscape painting, addressing both their inspiring relationship with French Impressionism and their interest in the Barbizon School as well as the modern Dutch landscape tradition. In addition, an overview of German Impressionism and the development of German landscape painting in the 19th century introduce the subject matter in depth. Romantics, realists, revolutionaries : masterpieces of 19th-century German painting from the Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig by Realists, Revolutionaries : 19th century German masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig (Exhibition) Romantics ( Book )
2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Despite the vast number of Americans who claim German ancestry, there is neither a single major collection of 19th century German painting in the US nor have their been any exhibitions focusing on this subject in such detail. This volume redresses the balance. Although many will not be familiar with the great artists included in the volume, Caspar David Friedrich, Lovis Corinth, and Max Klinger are well-known names whose work forms the core of the permenant collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig, Germany. The 84 paintings reproduced in this sumptuously illustrated volume provide a rare opportunity to learn about these masters and their influence, especially between 1840 and 1880 when Germany had a profound impact on artistic life in America. - Publisher
