"On February 22, 1877, Congress authorized the United States to accept a statue, 'Liberty Lighting the World, ' which was the idea and work of a young French sculptor, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, in remembrance of the unity of the two countries. The 152-foot high statue was paid for by subscriptions of the French people; the 15-foot high granite base was paid for by American contributions. The presentation of the statue and the deed of gift took place in France on July 4, 1884, following which the statue was disassembled and shipped to New York City. there it was reassembled on Bedloe's Island, now Liberty island, in New York Harbor"--Envelope cover
