"At 73, France's ex-president, Emile Beaufort, faces declining health, but he still plays a vigorous role behind the scenes as a philosopher and, potentially, as a power broker. In particular, his relationship with Philippe Chalamont comes into play: Chalamont seems in line to be the next Prime Minister, and Beaufort's history with him is long, deep, and problematic. As Beaufort dictates his memoirs, his narrative take us to occasions, 15 and 20 years before, in which Chalamont and he clashed. Chalamont is not without talent and guile: he comes directly to Beaufort to see if they can sort things out"--IMDb

"Albert Quentin, a crusty, reformed alcoholic, runs an inn in a small Normandy town. One day a young stranger, Gabriel Fouquet, wanders into his tavern, and the old man senses at once that they are kindred spirits. Fouquet, after years of aimless drifting, has come to fetch the schoolgirl daughter he has never seen. Fearful he will be a disappointment to the child, he meets the crisis by building up his courage with alcohol. A sympathetic Quentin, despite his vow never to touch another drop, joins Fouquet in a drinking bout. In the course of their escapade, Quentin recaptures the spirit of his adventurous past in China as a French marine while his companion's imagination takes him to Spain where he fancies himself to be both a flamenco dancer and a toreador. With the coming of the sobering dawn, both men are forced to face reality and Fouquet goes to fetch his daughter. While Quentin is seeing them off, he recalls a Chinese legend according to which the bitter, cold winter would bring hundreds of small monkeys from the wilderness to the towns. They would wander aimlessly about until the kindly townspeople placed them on trains and sent them back to their familiar forests. When the child asks her father if Quentin really helped the lost monkeys, Fouquet replies, 'Well, I know for a fact of one monkey he put on a train'"--AFI catalog, 1961-1970
