"Two teenagers on neighboring farms steal glances and hide their romance from their feuding fathers. Little do these love-birds know, however, that their fathers are actually good friends who've hatched a plan--with the help of a mystical roving side-show and its equally mysterious ring master--to get these lovers down the aisle! But be careful what you wish for, because to bring these families together, they must first be torn apart!"--The container

The fantasticks tells an allegorical story, loosely based on the play "The Romancers" ("Les Romanesques") by Edmond Rostand, concerning two neighboring fathers who trick their children, Luisa and Matt, into falling in love by pretending to feud. The fathers hire traveling actors to stage a mock abduction, so that Matt can heroically seem to save Luisa, ending the supposed feud. When the children discover the deception, they reject the arranged love match and separate. Each then gains disillusioning experiences of the real world, seen in parallel fantasy sequences. They return to each other bruised but enlightened, and they renew their vows with more maturity

Harvey Schmidt(

8 editions published in 1973 in English and held by 270 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Celebration is an attempt at a ritual musical. Based upon the ancient dramatic (and religious) enactment of the battle between Winter and Summer, it is set in a contemporary modern city on New Year's Eve. There at a party for the very rich, and innocent, green, young boy and a wealthy, burnt-out decadent old man battle for the favours of an ambitious young actress. Overseeing all, in the dual role of cynical bum and priestly narrator, is Potempkin, who invites us to join in this ancient celebration of the inevitable cycle of rebirth, the "seed beneath the snow."

The lyricist/librettist of The Fantasticks, the longest-running show in the history of the American theatre, here takes on a new role as guide through the magical world of the stage musical. He begins his tour with a brief history, tracing the musical's origins to the variety shows and operettas of the early 1900s, from which gradually emerged the works of such masters as Kern, Berlin, Gershwin and Porter, and a tradition best exemplified by the mid-century classics of Rodgers and Hammerstein. A break-up of that tradition, reflecting the immense changes in every aspect of postwar American life, was inevitable. So, gradually new forms evolved, and today we have the "Dance Musical," the "Concept Musical," the "Rock Musical" and the "Sung-Through Musical," all running alongside shows, some hugely successful, that revive or try to reinvent the past
