Textbook of medical ethics by Erich H Loewy( Book )

11 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When physicians in training enter their clinical years and first begin to become involved in clinical decision making, they soon find that more than the technical data they had so carefully learned is involved. Prior to that time, of course, they were aware that more than technology was involved in practicing medicine, but here, for the first time, the reality is forcefully brought home. It may be on the medical ward, when a patient or a patient's relatives ask that no further treatment be given and that the patient be allowed to die; it may be in ob/gyn, when a 4- or 5-month pregnant lady with two other children and just deserted by her husband pleads for an abortion; it may be in the outpatient setting, where patients unable to afford enough to eat cannot afford to buy antibiotics for their sick child or provide him or her with the recom mended diet. Whatever the setting, students soon find themselv. es con fronted with problems in which an answer is not given by the technical possibilities alone; indeed, students may have to face situations in which, all things considered, the use of these technical possibilities seems ill-advised. But choices need to be made. Some of us may choose to hide behind a mastery of technology
Changing health care systems from ethical, economic, and cross cultural perspectives by Erich H Loewy( Book )

16 editions published between 2001 and 2004 in English and held by 197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume explores the impact of various health-care structures on the ability of health-care professionals to practice in an ethically acceptable manner. The limits of ethical possibility are created by the system within which health-care workers must practice: a system which mandates `getting to know your patient' but at the same time is restricted by financial concerns of a hospital, hospice, or a health management organization. This juxtaposition of the two conflicting concerns of a health-care worker is discussed in this volume. Among the issues addressed are: Is it possible to appreciate patients' goals and values within a system that mandates that only a short time be spent with each patient? Ethical issues raised in a system where patients are treated by different physicians inside and outside the hospital; Health-care ethics which deal with the concerns of those with access to care but are not concerned with the needs of those who lack access to care. This volume will be of interest to health-care ethicists, as well as health-care professionals

The Selection of Critical Errors on a Medical School Certifying Examination by Dorthea Juul( Book )

1 edition published in 1987 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This study analyzed the relationship between selecting critical errors (choices that would be dangerous to patients) and conventional test scores on a medical school certifying examination that included three item formats: regular and weighted multiple-choice questions and patient management problems. Data from a Clinical Certifying Examination administered to 279 seniors as the University of Illinois College of Medicine were analyzed. It was found that while there were significant negative correlations between test scores and number of critical errors made across the three different item formats, there were nonetheless students who passed the examination although they made a relatively large number of critical errors. Implications for teaching and testing are discussed. Four tables present data on critical errors. (Sld)
