"A large part of the present work appeared originally in the pages of Appleton's Magazine, the editors of which shared with the writer the belief that there was a lively desire for information concerning the discoveries made by those whose special endeavor has been to throw a scientific light on the nature and possibilities of human personality. The following chapters, therefore, have been prepared for the purpose of indicating first what has been accomplished thus far by scientific students of the self, and of assisting the reader to prosecute study on his own account with the aid of the technical works which he will find enumerated in the bibliographical essay at the close of the book--an essay purposely confined so far as possible to works of recent publication. The attempt has been made, to correlate the discoveries of the psychical researchers and the psychopathologists with a view to showing that instead of undermining the long-cherished faith in the immortality of man the results of their inquiries and experiments confirm and buttress it"--Préf. The education of Karl Witte : or, The training of the child by Karl Heinrich Gottfried Witte( Book )

10 editions published between 1914 and 2013 in English and German and held by 124 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Johann Heinrich Friedrich Karl Witte (born July 1st, 1800 in Lochau (now part of Schkopau); died March 6th, 1883 in Halle) was a German jurist and Dante Alighieri scholar. He was the son of a pastor Karl Heinrich Gottfried Witte who encouraged a fairly intense program of learning. When Karl was nine, he spoke five languages and at the age of 12 became a doctor of philosophy at the University of Giessen in Germany. The book focuses on the treatment Karl received from each of his parents as a child, which focused on a combination of teaching by curiosity, intrigue, humor and sarcasm also incorporating fun learning games into everyday activities. It helped that Karl Sr. was an influential and highly-regarded scholar himself in both Austria and Germany, thus, from a young age, Karl Jr. was able to mingle with the sons and daughters of accomplished men & women, and, Karl Sr. was able to take Karl Jr. to many on-location places such as factories, mines and newspaper printing presses, which may be off limits to people of more modest means and backgrounds

Adventurings in the psychical by H. Addington Bruce( Book )

A witty Frenchwoman was once asked if she believed in ghosts. "No, not at all," was her reply. "But I am terribly afraid of them." Most people feel precisely this way about ghosts, though few are candid enough to acknowledge it. In broad daylight, or when seated before a cheery fire among a group of congenial friends, it is easy to be skeptical, and to regard ghosts as mere products of imagination, superstition, credulity, hysteria, or indigestion. But it is notorious that even the most skeptical are liable to creepy sensations and sometimes outright panic if they experience "uncanny" sights or sounds in the darkness of the night, or in lonely, uninhabited places. Churchyards have never been popular resorts of those who go for a stroll in the cool of the evening. And let a house once get the reputation of being "haunted," it is next to impossible to find tenants for it. Yet this almost universal attitude is entirely and fundamentally wrong. There is no reason for being afraid of ghosts, and there are many reasons for believing in them. I do not, of course, mean to say that all ghosts are real ghosts. There are plenty of bogus ghosts, and there always will be, as long as men eat and drink too much, play practical jokes on one another, and allow their houses to become run down and infested by rats and mice
