25 editions published between 1993 and 2014 in English and held by 1,026 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, built on the foundation of the earlier volume Perspectives on Media Effects, serves not only as a reference volume for scholars interested in the topic, but also receives widespread use as a textbook for classes in media effects. Media effects research is regularly reshaped by critics from "the outside," whose provocative critiques cause researchers to rethink their assumptions, reexamine their findings, and recast their theories. The contributors to this volume represent some of the finest scholars in the media effects tradition who have weathered both the private storms from within and the public storms from the outside

This book brings together a group of scholars to share findings and insights on the effects of media on children and family. Their contributions reflect not only widely divergent political orientations and value systems, but also three distinct domains of inquiry into human motivation and behavior -- social scientific, psychodynamic (or psychoanalytical), and clinical practice. Each of these three domains is privy to important evidence and insights that need to transcend epistemological and methodological boundaries if understanding of the subject is to improve dramatically. This volume takes the next step in the evolution of mass communication research tradition from effects to processes -- a more detailed and microanalytical analysis of the psychological processes involved in receiving and reacting to electronic media messages. This domain includes investigations into those psychological processes that occur between the process of selecting media messages for consumption and assessments of whatever processes mediate the long-term impact such message consumption may have on consumers' subsequent behavior. Loneliness of Adolescents and Their Choice and Enjoyment of Love-Celebrating Versus Love-Lamenting Popular Music by Rhonda Gibson( )

1 edition published in 2000 in Undetermined and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Black and white male and female high school students subdivided into high and low loneliness groups in relation to romantic deprivation rated their enjoyment of love-lamenting and love-celebrating videos of popular romantic music. Loneliness proved inconsequential for the enjoyment of love-lamenting songs. However, highly lonely males enjoyed love-celebrating songs markedly less than less lonely males; in contrast, highly lonely females enjoyed love-celebrating songs more than less lonely females. Indications of music choices in hypothetical situations of romantic success and failure yielded strikingly different results, with most students reporting that they would choose music that matched their mood
