Wer sich heute mit dem Gedichtzyklus Pierrot lunaire auseinandersetzt, gelangt bald zu dem gleichnamigen Melodram für eine Sprechstimme und acht Instrumente op. 21 von Arnold Schönberg. Das in drei gleich große Teile I bis III gegliederte Werk ist vom Komponisten so angelegt, dass der Eindruck entsteht, hier sei ein geschlossenes Ganzes in Musik überführt worden. Tatsächlich bilden die von Schönberg vertonten einundzwanzig Gedichte lediglich eine Auswahl aus dem fünfzig Gedichte umfassenden Text des belgischen Autors Albert Giraud. Otto Erich Hartleben ist heute nahezu vergessen. Als das Buch Pierrot lunaire von Albert Giraud in der deutschen Übertragung von Otto Erich Hartleben 1911 im Verlag Georg Müller in München erscheint, ist der kongeniale Übersetzer dieser fünfzig Gedichte bereits sechs Jahre tot, und das Werk, von dem Franz Blei schreibt, dass es sein bleibendes sei, ist über seine Vertonung durch Schönberg nur wenigen Musikfreunden bekannt. Pierrot lunaire ist das 1884 veröffentlichte Werk des belgischen Lyrikers Albert Giraud, der am 23. Juni 1860 in Löwen als Marie-Émile-Albert Kayenbergh geboren wurde. Albert Giraud gehörte zu der Gruppe der „Parnassiens“ und war Mitarbeiter der Zeitschrift La jeune Belgique. Nach Pierrot lunaire veröffentlichte er 1891 Pierrot narcisse; Le scribe erschien bereits 1883, und wenigstens Le sang des roses und La guirlande des dieux von 1910 sowie Le miroir caché von 1921 seien an dieser Stelle erwähnt. Giraud, von dem derzeit weder in Deutschland noch in Frankreich irgend ein Buch erhältlich ist, starb am 26. Dezember 1929 in Brüssel
