Using peer- and adult-mediated sociodramatic to assess and facilitate play, play discourse, and narrative : a mixed methods study by Patricia A Becker( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

An abundance of research in the past thirty years has addressed relationships between cognitive, social, and linguistic development and components of socio-dramatic play and narrative. Fewer studies have investigated the relationships between socio-dramatic play and narrative or the use of socio-dramatic play-based narrative assessment and instruction - particularly in preschool children with language impairment. The purpose of this mixed methods, formative, single-subject pilot study was to explore the use of peer- and adult- mediated socio-dramatic play to assess and facilitate the play, play discourse and narrative of preschool children with and without language impairment. An integrated cognitive and social learning framework guided the research questions and methodology. The study was conducted in an inclusive 4-year-old kindergarten classroom during a 5-month period. Participants included eight focus students, their parents, their classroom teacher and the researcher. The participant/researcher collected pre-instructional, instructional, and post-instructional qualitative and quantitative data. Quantitative measures of vocabulary, play, play retellings and narrative assessed the effectiveness of the instruction. Ethnographic, qualitative data included audio, video, and written documentation of interviews, observations, and play discourse. Constant comparative methodology and analyses of the play, play discourse and play retellings were utilized to code categories and themes. The findings suggested that socio-dramatic play is an effective medium for observing, assessing and analyzing complex play, play discourse, and narrative. Differences and similarities in child-child and adult-child play and interactions were observed and a variety of factors were found to influence the quantity and quality of the play, play discourse and narratives. Conceptual and theoretical implications related to how play, play discourse, and narrative development, assessment, and instruction are viewed are discussed. The development and dissemination of practice-oriented, evidence-based guidelines for enriching play, play discourse and narrative skills in inclusive preschool environments are recommended. Replication with a larger focus group and/or control group, exploration of peer-mediated play, play discourse and narrative through a critical discourse lens, and methodological changes to assessment and instructional practices for children with language impairment and other disabilities are suggested
