Anyone who has seen the 1999 film Anna and The King with Jodie Foster or the musical (and 1956 movie with Yul Brynner) The King and I, will be familiar with Anna Leonowens' story. A widow with two children, Leonowen went with her children to Siam (now Thailand) for six years, from 1862-1868. There she served as a governess to the sixty-four children of King Rama IV. When she returned to England, Leonowen supported herself and her children by writing. While The English Governess at the Siamese Court is supposed to be autobiographical, Leonowen is often criticized for embellishing the facts. Whether fact or partial fiction, anyone who enjoyed the musical or movies will find this to be a thoroughly entertaining read. Be warned—it is difficult to put down
