Hypnerotomachia Poliphili = The strife of love in a dream by Francesco Colonna( Book )

21 editions published between 1546 and 1926 in French and French, Middle and held by 91 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"It is hard to believe that the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, printed by Aldus Manutius in 1499, one of the most famous books in the world, read by every Renaissance intellectual and endlessly referred to in studies of art and culture ever since, has never appeared in English. One reason, no doubt, is the length and difficulty of the text. It is a strange, pagan, pedantic, erotic, allegorical, mythological romance relating in highly stylized Italian the quest of Poliphilo for his beloved Polia. The author (presumed to be Francesco Colonna, a friar of dubious reputation) was obsessed by architecture, landscape and costume - it is not going too far to say sexually obsessed - and its 174 woodcuts are a primary source for Renaissance ideas on both buildings and gardens. In 1592 a beginning was made to produce an English version but the translator gave up after only a third of the text. Now, at last, the task has been triumphantly accomplished by Joscelyn Godwin, who succeeds in reproducing all its wayward charm and arcane learning in language accessible to the modern reader."--Jacket

NFL dreams can quickly vanish, and a black man could either go with the flow or become another obituary name, added to the local Newspaper. They say it takes a village to raise a child. Amir had the whole hood behind him. He was a beckon of hope for niggas who ve been discarded by society. North Carolina has been breeding him to be their star, but he had others plans in mind. Amir wanted to be like his daddy, a hustler with principles. He kept his enemies close and treated his friends like family. Death Before Dishonor was his motto. When his childhood friend ends up in prison with a nine year bid, Amir was true to the game, and held him down. He adhered to the code of the streets. But would that be enough to keep his crew together? Would Raleigh NC produce the first crime family that doesn't know how to bend or fold? Would Amir be able to forgive one of his childhood friends for being Unfaithful To The Game which made him the man he is today? Sometimes, a big booty and a smile can bring a soldier to his knees ... Unfaithful To The Game explores the consequences of violating the code of the streets ... Once a vow is taken, there's no turning back. -- Publisher description

5 editions published between 1571 and 1635 in French and French, Middle and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Both Machiavelli and Guicciardini looked to the past to understand the present. In his Discourses on the First Decade of Livy, Machiavelli examined Roman history in order to identify its underlying political principles. Guicciardini, who would go on from a career in politics to write his monumental History of Italy, tended to look at the motives of the people who shaped history. Reflecting on ancient Rome, both thinkers refined their conceptions of government with an eye to the political turmoil of their own Florence." "Based on the definitive Italian editions and including extensive explanatory notes, The Sweetness of Power re-creates a fascinating conflict that helped to shape the history of western political thought."--Jacket
