After writing The Jungle, his scathing indictment of the meatpacking industry, Sinclair turned his sights on the early days of the California oil industry in a highly entertaining story featuring a cavalcade of characters including senators, oil magnates, Hollywood film starlets, and a crusading evangelist. This lively and panoramic book, which was recently cited by David Denby in the New Yorker as being Sinclair's "most readable" novel, is now the inspiration for the Paramount Vantage major motion picture, There Will Be Blood

Jimmie Higgins; a story by Upton Sinclair( Book )

13 editions published between 1919 and 1948 in German and Undetermined and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sinclair wrote Jimmie Higgins in response to the First World War. He broke with the main body of the American Socialist Party at that time, favoring U.S. involvement in WWI, because of the threat of German militarism. After the war, however, he opposed any interference to the developing Bolshevik regime in Moscow. The title character of Jimmie Higgins enlists in the army and fights bravely, but is tortured into madness following the war, for espousing the same policies as did Sinclair himself

The jungle by Upton Sinclair( Book )

10 editions published between 1923 and 1949 in German and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Jungle is a 1906 novel written by author and socialist journalist Upton Sinclair. It was written about the horrifying conditions and corruption of the American meatpacking industry and stockyards in Chicago during the early 20th century. The novel depicts in harsh tones the poverty, absence of social programs, unpleasant living and working conditions, and hopelessness prevalent among the "have-nots", which is contrasted with the deeply rooted corruption on the part of the "haves". The sad state of turn-of-the-century labor is placed front and center for the American public to see, suggesting that something needed to be changed

Ende und Anfang, ein Lebensbuch by Hermynia Zur Mühlen( Book )

21 editions published between 1929 and 2014 in 5 languages and held by 36 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Mühlen rejected her upbringing to pursue a career as a professional writer. She documents her extraordinary life in this lively and personal memoir, first published in Germany in 1929. This revised and corrected translation -- with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman -- will appeal especially to readers interested in womens history, World War I, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries"--Publisher's description
