Jean-Michel Basquiat 1981 : the studio of the street by Jean-Michel Basquiat( Book )

7 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 251 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1981 Jean-Michel Basquiat made the momentous transition from the street to the studio. Jean-Michel Basquiat 1981: The Studio of the Street explores that critical year, functioning simultaneously as a coming-of-age story and an intimate oral history of the shifting cultural tide of New York's downtown scene. It is also a groundbreaking survey of rarely seen works that chart the artist's progression from spray-painted text to text-and-image; from materials found on the street to large, traditional painted canvases; and from pure drawing to his uniquely evocative hybrid of drawing and painting. Marrying an exuberant spontaneity and art brut style, with a firm command of not only art materials but also art history, Basquiat defined eighties Neo-Expressionism and left behind a body of work that resonates no less powerfully today."--Jacket
Downtown 81 by Edo Bertoglio( Visual )

13 editions published between 1981 and 2010 in English and held by 228 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fashion-photographer Bertoglio's portrait of the New York art scene circa 1981. The main focus is the provocative 19-year-old artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, already known for his excursions into street graffiti art and pioneering electro-beat. Shot as "New York Beat" in 1980-81 but completed for release nearly 20 years later when archival footage thought to have been lost was recovered. Many of the film's original sound elements were lost during the 20 years it spent in limbo, so much of the dialogue has been re-dubbed

Basquiat by Jean-Michel Basquiat( Book )

11 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in 4 languages and held by 79 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) quickly became one of art history's most luminescent personalities; his friendships with Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Madonna, as well as his tragic death at the age of twenty-seven, are the stuff of legend. This retrospective publication traces the artist's unique career and pinpoints his important position in art history. Basquiat's works are marked by the kind of intensity and energy that also determined the course of his brief life. In just eight years--comparable to the career of Egon Schiele--Basquiat not only managed to create an extensive oeuvre, but also to establish new figurative and expressive elements alongside Conceptual and Minimal Art. At the age of twenty-one, he became the youngest artist ever to be invited to the documenta, while his work also anticipated that of Germany's Junge Wilde movement and the art of the nineties."--Publisher's website

Warhol - Basquiat by Kunstforum Wien( Book )

2 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in German and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Kunstforum Wien is presenting a major retrospective of the works of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The two artists undertook numerous collaborations in 1984 / 85, which provide compelling testimony to the multi-faceted cross-fertilization between these two so disparate artistic personalities. Individual works by both artists are on view alongside the collaborative efforts. A monumental Retrospective Painting unites some of Warhol's legendary screen-print subjects: from the Campbell's Soup Can and Marilyn to his Flowers and Electric Chair. Major works by Basquiat will also be featured: paintings and drawings executed between 1981 and 1988. While his early phase still bears traces of the graffiti style, the later images are more intricately detailed. Basquiat's oeuvre represents one of the great milestones in the New Painting movement of the 1980s, an authentically expressive artistic testimony that diverged from the carefully cultivated and staged postmodernism of the painter princes. 0Exhibition: Kunstforum, Vienna, Austria (16.10.2013-2.2.2014)

Ménage à trois : Warhol, Basquiat, Clemente by Dieter Buchhart( Book )

5 editions published in 2012 in German and English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The New York art scene of the 1980s is legendary - vital, creative and multimedia-based. It provided young talent with a playground full of opportunities. Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente are three of the main protagonists of this era. Between 1983 and 1985, they produced a number of collaborative works, whose appeal was based on their contrary painterly gestures. The works reflect the era, the (pop) star role and the new way in which the artists saw themselves, their mutual fascination but also the dark side of fame. This catalogue provides a comprehensive look at the collaboration between the three artists in the context of their own work and shows the captivating references and differences, the multifaceted nature of the collaboration and its art-historical importance."--Publisher's description
