Au tournant du XIVe siècle, Duns Scot porte à son achèvement la pensée scolastique et esquisse la figure moderne de la métaphysique.Il rejette l'analogie appliquée à la question de l'être : à la place des articulations multiples supposées par l'analogie et la théorie de la participation qui la soutient, le concept d'étant, décollé du réel, offre une unité primordiale, qui embrasse Dieu et la créature, la substance et les accidents. Connu naturellement, sans illumination divine, il remplace la créature (Thomas d'Aquin) ou Dieu (Henri de Gand) comme objet premier de l'intellect.La théologie des noms divins se transforme ainsi en attribution univoque de concepts formels, distincts les uns des autres en Dieu comme dans la créature, et pourtant fondus dans l'identité infinie de l'essence divine.La multiplicité des sens de l'être et la connaissance de Dieu passent sous l'égide du concept d'étant, neutre, indifférent et commun à toutes choses. Celui-ci permet l'institution d'une métaphysique entendue comme science de l'étant en tant qu'étant : la genèse d'une ontologie.- Olivier Boulnois
