Su-Mei Tse : nested by Su-Mei Tse( Book )

4 editions published in 2018 in German and English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Marked by her cosmopolitan origins, between Europe and Asia, and by an attention to the sonorous dimension of the world, the practice of Su-Mei Tse involves issues such as time, memory, musicality, and language. Presented in 2017-19 at Mudam Luxembourg, Aargauer Kunsthaus, Yuz Museum in Shanghai, and Taipei Fine Arts Museum, her exhibition 'Nested' is the result of several years of research in different geographical contexts, starting with Italy and Asia. New directions are apparent in her work, including contemplation, our relation to the vegetable and the mineral, the multiplicity of modes of existence, and the possibility of a personal relationship with history. Like the exhibitions, this publication was conceived to be like a notebook: a form that brings together impressions that have occurred in everyday life - be they visual, sound, or memory related - and blends them in a subjective and intuitive way, allowing a whole network of echoes and correspondences to be deployed. Combining texts of Doryun Chong, Emanuele Coccia, Christophe Gallois, and Katrin Weilenmann with a series of 'visual chapters' conceived by the artist in close collaboration with graphic designer Anja Lutz, it constitutes the most comprehensive book on Su-Mei Tse's work to date"--Publisher's website

Death and life of fiction : modern monsters : Taipei Biennial 2012 journal by Taibei shuang nian zhan( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 39 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Taowu, a mythological Chinese monster symbolizing ignorance, has been revived recently by historians and writers to illustrate the violent arc of Chinese utopian modernity. Taowu brings unheard of evils and sufferings to man, undermining humanity in favor of financial gain. This publication, generated by a monumental exhibition at the 2012 Taipei Biennial, and curated by noted cultural critic Anselm Franke, uses this mythological Chinese figure as the starting point for a series of essays addressing the current crisis. Modern Monsters functions as a conceptual and theoretical reader in conversation with the exhibition and deeply controversial subject. Comprised of 23 essays the book includes original contributions from the curators and editors Anselm Franke and Brian Kuan Wood along with Taiwanese literary historian David Der-Wei Wang. Other contributors are Nabil Ahmed, Eric Baudelaire, Chen Chieh-Jen Li, Hu Fang, Mark Fisher, James T. Hong, Henri Lefebvre, Masao Matsuda, Ian Svenonius, Sophie Wahnich, and many more

Ai Weiwei : que xi by Weiwei Ai( Book )

3 editions published in 2014 in Chinese and held by 37 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The solo exhibition Ai Weiwei absent at Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) is the artist's first large-scale solo exhibition to be held anywhere in the ethnic Chinese world. The museum presents the exhibition to convey Ai Weiwei's dynamic works of arts, his ideas and influential power to audience. Ai Weiwei absent presents 21 sets of artwork, spanning a period from 1980s to 2011, encompassing a variety of forms such as installation and video, and using a variety of materials such as ceramics, marble, antique utensils and bicycles. It also includes a series of over 100 photographic works, 75 of which were taken by the artist during his stay in New York between 1983 and 1993, while the other 25 pieces were shot after he moved back Beijing East Village in 1993. The artist's most recent work, Forever Bicycles, created specially for this exhibition, is composed of 1,200 bicycles and installed in an exhibition space 10 meters high. Bicycles have long been the most common means of transport in China and as such are both familiar and intimate, but Ai Weiwei strips away the functionality of the object. He takes his own sensitivity and preferences and through them expands the idea of using finished objects. The use of 1,200 bikes and the large structure of the work were particular challenges in the construction of the piece. In addition, as the bikes are piled layer upon layer on top of each other, their wheel axles are transformed to form a labyrinthine-like space. Visitors can appreciate and reflect on the aesthetics of the abstract shapes from different angles, at the same time feeling first-hand the work's great energy and appeal. Date: October 29, 2011 - January 29, 2012
