The transformation of the world : a global history of the nineteenth century by Jürgen Osterhammel( Book )

71 editions published between 2008 and 2019 in 5 languages and held by 2,095 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A monumental history of the nineteenth century, The Transformation of the World offers a panoramic and multifaceted portrait of a world in transition. Jürgen Osterhammel, an eminent scholar who has been called the Braudel of the nineteenth century, moves beyond conventional Eurocentric and chronological accounts of the era, presenting instead a truly global history of breathtaking scope and towering erudition. He examines the powerful and complex forces that drove global change during the "long nineteenth century," taking readers from New York to New Delhi, from the Latin American revolutions to the Taiping Rebellion, from the perils and promise of Europe's transatlantic labor markets to the hardships endured by nomadic, tribal peoples across the planet. Osterhammel describes a world increasingly networked by the telegraph, the steamship, and the railways. He explores the changing relationship between human beings and nature, looks at the importance of cities, explains the role slavery and its abolition played in the emergence of new nations, challenges the widely held belief that the nineteenth century witnessed the triumph of the nation-state, and much more. -- Provided by publisher
Colonialism : a theoretical overview by Jürgen Osterhammel( Book )

74 editions published between 1995 and 2017 in 5 languages and held by 1,110 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This highly acclaimed book represents a new approach to colonialism. Concise but sweeping, it encompasses the processes of colonization and decolonization from the early modern period to the twentieth century." "Virtually all other authors to date have looked at strategies of colonial conquest, exploitation, and rule from the imperial point of view. Osterhammel shows that the colonial situation developed in ways that duplicated neither the metropolis nor the pre-colonial society, but instead blended these and added a new direction characteristic only of colonial realms. Osterhammel emphasizes that the Europeans were normally not considered dangerous invaders by local population until they threatened the traditional cultures with missionaries, European schools, and bureaucracy."--Jacket
Globalization : a short history by Jürgen Osterhammel( Book )

15 editions published between 2003 and 2014 in English and Chinese and held by 922 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Arguing that the world did not turn "global" overnight, the book traces the emergence of globalization over the past seven or eight centuries. In fact, the authors write, the phenomenon can be traced back to early modern large-scale trading, for example, the silk trade between China and the Mediterranean region, the shipping routes between the Arabian Peninsula and India, and the more frequently traveled caravan routes of the Near East and North Africa - all conduits for people, goods, coins, artwork, and ideas." "Osterhammel and Petersson argue that the period from 1750 to 1880 - an era characterized by the development of free trade and the long-distance impact of the industrial revolution - represented an important phase in the globalization phenomenon." "This book will appeal to historians, economists, and anyone in the social sciences who is interested in the historical emergence of globalization."--Jacket
Max Weber and his contemporaries by Wolfgang J Mommsen( Book )

28 editions published between 1986 and 2010 in English and held by 703 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Max Weber and His Contemporaries provides an unrivalled tour d'horizon of European intellectual life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and an assessment of the pivotal position within it occupied by Max Weber. Weber's many interests in and contributions to, such diverse fields as epistemology, political sociology, the sociology of religion and economic history are compared with and connected to those of his friends, pupils and antagonists and also of those contemporaries with whom he had neither a personal relationship nor
Decolonization : a short history by Jan C Jansen( Book )

11 editions published between 2012 and 2019 in English and Italian and held by 621 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The end of colonial rule in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean was one of the most important and dramatic developments of the twentieth century. In the decades after World War II, dozens of new states emerged as actors in global politics. Long-established imperial regimes collapsed, some more or less peacefully, others amid mass violence. This book takes an incisive look at decolonization and its long-term consequences, revealing it to be a coherent yet multidimensional process at the heart of modern history. Jan Jansen and Jürgen Osterhammel trace the decline of European, American, and Japanese colonial supremacy from World War I to the 1990s. Providing a comparative perspective on the decolonization process, they shed light on its key aspects while taking into account the unique regional and imperial contexts in which it unfolded. Jansen and Osterhammel show how the seeds of decolonization were sown during the interwar period and argue that the geopolitical restructuring of the world was intrinsically connected to a sea change in the global normative order. They examine the economic repercussions of decolonization and its impact on international power structures, its consequences for envisioning world order, and the long shadow it continues to cast over new states and former colonial powers alike. Concise and authoritative, Decolonization is the essential introduction to this momentous chapter in history, the aftershocks of which are still being felt today. --

Unfabling the East : the Enlightenment's encounter with Asia by Jürgen Osterhammel( Book )

9 editions published between 2018 and 2019 in English and held by 389 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During the long eighteenth century, Europe's travelers, scholars, and intellectuals looked to Asia in a spirit of puzzlement, irony, and openness. In this panoramic and colorful book, Jürgen Osterhammel tells the story of the European Enlightenment's nuanced encounter with the great civilizations of the East, from the Ottoman Empire and India to China and Japan. Here is the acclaimed book that challenges the notion that Europe's formative engagement with the non-European world was invariably marred by an imperial gaze and presumptions of Western superiority. Osterhammel shows how major figures such as Leibniz, Voltaire, Gibbon, and Hegel took a keen interest in Asian culture and history, and introduces lesser-known scientific travelers, colonial administrators, Jesuit missionaries, and adventurers who returned home from Asia bearing manuscripts in many exotic languages, huge collections of ethnographic data, and stories that sometimes defied belief. Osterhammel brings the sights and sounds of this tumultuous age vividly to life, from the salons of Paris and the lecture halls of Edinburgh to the deserts of Arabia, the steppes of Siberia, and the sumptuous courts of Asian princes. He demonstrates how Europe discovered its own identity anew by measuring itself against its more senior continent, and how it was only toward the end of this period that cruder forms of Eurocentrism--and condescension toward Asia--prevailed
Die Entzauberung Asiens : Europa und die asiatischen Reiche im 18. Jahrhundert by Jürgen Osterhammel( Book )

23 editions published between 1998 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 275 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

13 editions published between 2013 and 2015 in German and English and held by 220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An emerging modern world, 1750-1870 by Sebastian Conrad( Book )

6 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 194 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The long century between 1750 and 1880 was a transformative period in global history. During this time, a world of connected, but essentially still separated large regions, gave way to a globally integrated world. Ever since, different parts of the world were linked not through trade and war alone. Cultural developments, political reform and social change were increasingly entangled across continents and cultures. Emerging Modernity, the fourth volume of the 6-volume series A History of the World, charts this transformative period. How did the modern world economy emerge? Why did industrialization begin in England and not in China, and were there origins of capitalist development outside of the West? What were the roles of slaves and of nomads in this integrating world? Was there a bourgeoisie outside of Euro-America? To what extent did the large empires keep the rise of nation-states in check? Was the emergence of the "Muslim world" an effect of globalization? Such issues are at the center of the four large, thematically organized chapters of the present volume.--

Internationale Geschichte : Themen, Ergebnisse, Aussichten( Book )

9 editions published in 2000 in German and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jahrhundert by Sven Oliver Müller( Book )

7 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in German and held by 143 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How did the way people looked at music affect the interactions among different groups and individuals in the course of the 20th century? This volume presents a number of case examples from various musical genres and thus offers many insights into both general and genre-specific figurations of musical communication. This ranges from direct live acts to political productions, which cause inclusive and exclusive mechanisms to become active in communication processes taking place at various levels. The contributions to this volume show how, and why, opportunities for communication arise during musical activities which can lead to either complete harmony or fierce dissonance. --From publisher's website

Die Flughöhe der Adler Historische Essays zur globalen Gegenwart by Jürgen Osterhammel( Book )

8 editions published in 2017 in German and held by 131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
