The political use of racial narratives : school desegregation in Mobile, Alabama, 1954-97 by Richard A Pride( Book )

4 editions published between 2002 and 2008 in English and held by 278 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Arguing that politics is essentially a contest for meaning and that telling a story is an elemental political act, Richard A. Pride lays bare the history of school desegregation in Mobile, Alabama, to demonstrate the power of narrative in cultural and political change. This book describes the public, personal, and meta-narratives of racial inequality that have competed for dominance in Mobile. Pride begins with a white liberal's quest to desegregate the city's public schools in 1955 and traces which narratives--those of biological inferiority, white oppression, the behavior and values of blacks, and others--came to influence public policy and opinion over four decades. Drawing on contemporaneous sources, he reconstructs the stories of demonstrations, civic forums, court cases, and school board meetings as citizens of Mobile would have experienced them, inviting readers to trace the story of desegregation in Mobile through the voices of politicians, protestors, and journalists and to determine which narratives were indeed most powerful. Exploring who benefits and who pays when different narratives are accepted as true, Pride offers a step-by-step account of how Mobile's culture changed each time a new and more forceful narrative was used to justify inequality. More than a retelling of Mobile's story of desegregation, The Political Use of Racial Narratives promotes the value of rhetorical and narrative analysis in the social sciences and history."--Book cover

Plastic buckling of simply supported compressed plates by Richard A Pride( )

2 editions published in 1949 in English and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Tests were made of 14S-T6 aluminum-alloy square tubes to determine the critical compressive stress of simply supported flat plates in the plastic range. Excellent agreement is shown with with Stowell's theory for plastic buckling which is based upon a deformation theory of plasticity, close agreement with two other deformation-type theories of plastic buckling and withthe secant-modulus method, and marked disagreement with a buckling theory based upon a flow theory of plasticity

Effects of longtime environmental exposure on mechanical properties of sheet materials for a supersonic transport( Book )

4 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Studies of the effects of longtime environmental exposure on mechanical properties of supersonic transport sheet materials have been conducted. These materials include titanium alloys, stainless steels, aluminum alloys, and a composite. Titanium alloys and stainless steels have been investigated since 1961, and results have shown that exposures of 30,000 hours at 550 F (561 K) have had little effect on the strength characteristics. Hot salt stress corrosion occurs in titanium alloys under certain combinations of stress, temperature, and time but does not appear to be a problem at the operating conditions of a Mach 2.7 supersonic transport. Aluminum alloys were investigated to provide materials information for the Mach 2 speed range and have been found to be temperature limited by longtime creep strength. Properties of the polyimide resin glass fiber composite have been determined after 4000 hours exposure. This material appears to be suitable for extended use in a Mach 2.7 supersonic transport
Salt-stress-corrosion cracking of residually stressed Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V brake-formed sheet at 550° F (561° K) by Richard A Pride( )

Mechanical behavior of boron-epoxy and glass-epoxy filament-wound cylinders under various loads by Harvey W Herring( Book )

5 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study was made to determine the mechanical behavior of boron-epoxy and S-glass-epoxy filament-wound cylinders under tensile, compressive, torsional, and pressure loads. These cylinders were fabricated in either an orthotropic winding pattern or an isotropic pattern. Conventional theory used to predict the elastic behavior of glass-epoxy filament-wound cylinders was discovered to be equally adequate for the boron-epoxy cylinders. Attempts to correlate cylinder failure strengths calculated from existing state-of-the-art theories with experimental failure strengths met with varying success
A study of several oxidation-resistant coatings on Mo-0.5Ti alloy sheet at 2,500 ̊F by Donald R Rummler( Book )

3 editions published in 1964 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The results are presented of a study of several silicide-base oxidation-resistant coatings applied to 0.012-inch-thick molybdenum-alloy sheet. The specimens were both continuously and cyclically exposed at 2,500 degrees F in air. The effect of three different types of thermal cycles was investigated. A failure mechanism is proposed to explain the severe reduction observed in the ability of a coating to protect the substrate when thermally cycled. A failure mechanism for the continuously exposed coated specimens is also proposed. The investigation includes the results of X-ray studies and room-temperature mechanical-property tests on the coated specimens

Plastic buckling of extruded composite sections in compression by Elbridge Z Stowell( Book )

2 editions published in 1949 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The theory of plastic buckling, originally developed for individual plates, has been extended to apply to combinations of plates such as H- and Z-sections. The theory has been applied specifically to extruded H-sections of 75S-T aluminum alloy; the calculated buckling stresses agree satisfactorily with the results of tests
Transient heating effects on the bending strength of integral aluminum-alloy box beams by Richard A Pride( Book )

2 editions published in 1958 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Twenty-five square-tube beams made of aluminum alloy were tested to failure under various combinations of bending moment and transient heating. Two types of heat input were used so that the effect of thermal stresses could be separated from effects of material properties. Two sizes of square tubes were tested so that both elastic and plastic buckling stresses would be obtained
Compressive strength of stainless-steel sandwiches at elevated temperatures by Eldon E Mathauser( Book )

Plastic buckling of simply supported compressed plates by Richard A Pride( )

4 editions published in 1949 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An investigation was made to ascertain the validity of various theories for the plastic buckling of compressed simply supported plates by means of local-instability tests of drawn square tubes of l4B-T6 aluminum alloy. The results obtained were in excellent agreement with Stowell's unified theory for the plastic buckling of columns and plates (NACA TN No. l5456). This agreement, in addition to that previously obtained for columns and flanges, is considered a satisfactory experimental verification of this theory which is based on a deformation theory of plasticity. Two other plastic buckling theories of the deformation type and the empirical secant-modulus method also gave a close correlation with the test results, but a plastic buckling theory of the flow type showed a lack of agreement
The combinations of thermal and load stresses for the onset of permanent buckling in plates by George W Zender( Book )

2 editions published in 1957 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A simple and practical method for evaluating the onset of permanent buckling in plates in the presence of combined thermal and compressive load stresses is outlined. A particular application of the method shows reasonable agreement with tests of 17-7 PH stainless steel square tubes. The results indicate that the compressive load stress which the plate can support at the onset of permanent buckling is substantially reduced as the temperature difference of the plate and adjoining members increases
