The hunter and his art; a survey of rock art in Southern Africa by Jalmar Rudner( Book )

15 editions published between 1970 and 1974 in English and held by 324 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book has been written in part for the layman and in part for the serious student of rock art. The main archaeological discussion is in chapter four for those who are interested, while the history of the study of rock art is in chapter six. The pictures have been described and discussed as one would do when confronting them on the rocks. The rock shelters and the landscape around them have been described as well in order to give the reader some idea of the setting of the art. The shelter where the picture was originally traced, was the home or sanctuary of the painter and his people, and the valley or the mountain where the shelter was found was his living and hunting ground and, perhaps, a refuge where he could live in relative safety from enemies
