This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on In- stability, Transition and Turbulence, sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), during July 8 to August 2, 1991. This is the second workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, and its proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the title "Instability and Transition" edited by M. Y. Hussaini and R. G. Voigt. The objectives of these work- shops are to i) expose the academic community to current technologically im- portant issues of transition and turbulence in shear flows over the entire speed range, ii) acquaint the academic community with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC and foster interaction with these capabilities, and iii) accelerate progress in elucidating the fundamental phenomena of transition and turbulence, leading to improved transition and turbulence modeling in design methodologies. The research areas covered in these proceedings include receptiv- ity and roughness, nonlinear theories of transition, numerical simu- lation of spatially evolving flows, modelling of transitional and fully turbulent flows as well as some experiments on instability and tran- sition. In addition a one-day mini-symposium was held to discuss 1 recent and planned experiments on turbulent flow over a backward- facing step

The generation of long-wavelength, viscous-inviscid interactive Gortler vortices is studied in the linear regime by numerically solving the time-dependent governing equations. It is found that time dependent surface deformations, which assume a fixed nonzero shape at large times, generate steady Gortler vortices that amplify in the downstream direction. Thus, the Gortler instability in this regime is shown to be convective in nature, contrary to the earlier findings of Ruban and Savenkov. The disturbance pattern created by steady and streamwise-elongated surface obstacles on a concave surface is examined in detail, and also contrasted with the flow pattern due to roughness elements with aspect ratio of order unity on flat surfaces. Finally, tile applicability of the Briggs-Bers criterion to unstable physical systems of this type is questioned by providing a counterexample in the form of the inviscid limit of interactive Gortler vortices

Often, in solving a elliptic equation with Neumann boundary conditions, a compatibility condition has to be imposed for well-posedness. This condition involves integrals of the forcing function. When pseudospectral Chebyshev methods are used to discretize the partial differential equation, these integrals have to be approximated by an appropriate quadrature formula. The Gauss-Chebyshev (or any variant of it, like the Gauss-Lobatto) formula can not be used here since the integrals under consideration do not include the weight function. A natural candidate to be used in approximating the integrals is the Clenshaw-Curtis formula, however we show in this paper that this is the wrong choice and it may lead to divergence if time dependent methods are used to march the solution to steady state. We develop, in this paper, the correct quadrature formula for these problems. This formula takes into account the degree of the polynomials involved. We show that this formula leads to a well conditioned Chebyshev approximation to the differential equations and that the compatibility condition is automatically satisfied
