Seven brothers : a novel by Aleksis Kivi( Book )

21 editions published between 1929 and 1973 in English and held by 290 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The brothers are not a particularly peaceful lot and end up quarreling with the local constable, jury, vicar, churchwarden, and teachers--not to mention their neighbours in Toukola village. No wonder young girls' mothers do not regard them as good suitors. When they are required to learn to read before they can accept church confirmation and therefore official adulthood--and marry--they escape. Eventually they end up moving to distant Impivaara in the middle of relative wilderness, but their first efforts are shoddy--one Christmas Eve they end up burning down their new house. Next spring they try again and manage to kill a hostile herd of bulls. Ten years of clearing forest for fields, hard work and hard drinking--and Simeoni's delirium tremens--eventually make them change their ways. They learn to read on their own and eventually return to Jukola
Meek heritage by F. E Sillanpää( Book )

11 editions published between 1938 and 1971 in English and held by 286 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"There is a somewhat dirge-like quality to this story of Finland peasants, of the drear and bleak life of penniless crofters, without one alleviating moment of better fortune. A drunken father and a cowed and slatternly mother both die and an uncle and aunt in better fortune, take the boy, Jussi, when he is orphaned, but thrust their charity upon his consciousness. He never becomes more than the slow-witted, clumsy child, and his adult life follows the pattern of his childhood -- a sordid picture. Eventually, an old man, victim of circumstances in an abortive proletarian revolution, he faces a firing squad and reviews his life. --Kirkus
