Ancient Egyptian cylinder seals by N. B Millet( Book )

4 editions published in 1959 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This essay will attempt a stylistic study of the cylinder seals of ancient Egypt. The development of Egyptian glyptic will be followed from the earliest times down to the final replacement of the cylinder by the stamp seal in the early Middle Kingdom. Although there are considerable gaps in the evidence, enough material has survived for us to trace the main trends in style and content of the designs, and to a certain extent to relate the evolution of glyptic decoration to the development of Egyptian art as a whole. The cylinder seal was not indigenous to Egypt, however, but was an import from Mesopotamia, where it appeared at an earlier period than in Egypt and remained in use much onger, not disappearing until Persian times. The amount of material for the study of Mesopotamian cylinders is consequently much greater. Furthermore, the stylistic changes from period to period are much more striking in Mesopotamian glyptic than in that of Egypt, due to the fact that in the former country the decorative repertory included a wide range of representational motifs. The decoration of an Egyptian cylinder seals, on the other hand, consists almost exclusively of hieroglyphic inscriptions. This is an obvious handicap to the study of style, since the forms and to a large extent the proportions of the individual signs were fixed early and remained virtually unchanged during the period under discussion. Style in the narrow sense of the "artistic treatment of separate elements (modeling and so on) will then be of little use to us as a method of approach, and we must seek out other aspects of style to aid us. Before discussing this problem further, let us examine in a general way the use of the cylinder seal in Egypt
