The theory of externalities, public goods, and club goods by Richard Cornes( Book )

48 editions published between 1986 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,015 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents a theoretical treatment of externalities (i.e. uncompensated interdependencies), public goods, and club goods. The new edition updates and expands the discussion of externalities and their implications, coverage of asymmetric information, underlying game-theoretic formulations, and intuitive and graphical presentations. Aimed at well-prepared undergraduates and graduate students making a serious foray into this branch of economics, the analysis should also interest professional economists wishing to survey recent advances in the field. No other single source for the range of materials explored is currently available. Topics investigated include Nash equilibrium, Lindahl equilibria, club theory, preference-revelation mechanism, Pigouvian taxes, the commons, Coase Theorem, and static and repeated games. The authors use mathematical techniques only as much as necessary to pursue the economic argument. They develop key principles of public economics that are useful for subfields such as public choice, labor economics, economic growth, international economics, environmental and natural resource economics, and industrial organization
Duality and modern economics by Richard Cornes( Book )

21 editions published between 1988 and 2011 in English and held by 405 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dual arguments have become a standard tool for analysis of problems involving optimization by consumers and producers. The principal aim of this book is to provide a fairly systematic yet simple exposition of the basic structure of such arguments. The emphasis is not on providing mathematically general proofs; instead, a geometric approach is used to provide, in an informal way, an intuitive understanding of duality theory. This book introduces the most common alternative ways of representing preferences and technologies, such as indirect utility and distance functions, expenditure and cost functions, and profit and revenue functions. and it discusses the assumptions under which alternative formulations contain precisely the same information. Results such as Roy's identity. the Hotelling-Wold identity, and Shephard's lemma are fully explained. as are their roles in facilitating analysis of behaviour
The theory of externalities and public goods : essays in memory of Richard C. Cornes( )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This state-of-the art collection of papers analyses various aspects of the theory of externalities and public goods. The contributions employ new analytical techniques like the aggregative game approach, and discuss the philosophical underpinnings of the theory. Furthermore, they highlight a range of topical empirical applications including climate policy and counterterrorism. This contributed volume was written in memory of Richard C. Cornes, a pioneer in the theory of externalities and public goods.--
A new approach to solving production-appropriation games with many heterogeneous players by Richard Cornes( Book )

6 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We set out a model of production and appropriation involving many players, who differ with respect to both resource endowments and productivities. We write down the model in a novel way that permits our analysis to avoid the proliferation of dimensions associated with the best response function approach as the number of heterogeneous players increases. We establish existence of a unique equilibrium in pure strategies, and carry out some comparative static exercises
Joint production games and share functions by Richard Cornes( Book )

3 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On the private provision of contentious public characteristics by Richard Cornes( Book )

7 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We extend the standard public good provision model to allow players to either like or dislike the public characteristic. Those who dislike it are able to take actions to reduce its level. We present conditions under which the existence of a unique noncooperative equilibrium is retained, and analyze its normative and comparative static properties. -- public goods ; public bads ; aggregative games
Rentseeking by players with constant absolute risk aversion by Richard Cornes( Book )

3 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Matching as a cure for underprovision of voluntary public good supply : analysis and an example by Wolfgang Buchholz( Book )

5 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Matching mechanisms are regarded as an important instrument to bring about Pareto optimal allocations in a public good economy and to cure the underprovision problem associated with private provision of public goods. The desired Pareto optimal interior matching equilibrium, however, emerges only under very special conditions. But we show in this note that corner solutions, in which some agents choose zero flat contributions, normally avoid underprovision and illustrate and interpret our results by a simple numerical example. -- public goods ; matching ; Pareto optimality
Free riding and the inefficiency of the private production of pure public goods by Albert G Schweinberger( Book )

2 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Potentially harmful international cooperation on global public good provision by Wolfgang Buchholz( Book )

5 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Recent international climate negotiations suggest that complete agreements are unlikely to materialize. Instead, partial cooperation between like-minded countries appears a more likely outcome. In this paper we analyze the effects of such partial cooperation between like-minded countries. In doing so, we link the literature on partial cooperation with so-called matching approaches. Matching schemes are regarded as providing a promising approach to overcome undersupply of public goods like climate protection. The functioning of matching mechanisms in a setting with an incomplete agreement, i.e. a contract where only a subset of the players participates, has however not been investigated yet. This paper fills this research gap by analyzing incomplete matching agreements in the context of international climate protection. We analyse their effect on both welfare and the global climate protection level. We show that matching coalitions may bring about a decline in global public good provision and a reduction in the welfare of outsiders
Equilibrium existence and uniqueness in public good models : an elementary proof via contraction by Richard Cornes( Book )

3 editions published between 1996 and 1999 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Existence and warr neutrality for matching equilibria in a public good economy: an aggregative game approach by Wolfgang Buchholz( Book )

3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Using the aggregative game approach as developed by Cornes and Hartley (2003, 2007) this paper analyzes the conditions under which matching mechanisms in a public good economy lead to interior matching equilibria in which all agents make strictly positive flat contributions to the public good. In particular we show that the distribution of income among the agents is a crucial determinant for the existence of interior matching equilibria. In addition, we explore which matching mechanisms show Warr neutrality and how the size of the economy affects the possibility of implementing a certain type of Pareto optimal solutions through matching
