The Thirty Years' War by Geoffrey Parker( Book )

30 editions published between 1984 and 2007 in English and held by 1,293 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fought by over a dozen belligerents, the conflicts of the Thirty Years' War are recorded in over ten languages, with documents deposited in scores of archives scattered across Europe. The Thirty Years' War was not only a German civil war but also a confluence of the dynastic struggles between the Habsburgs and their various enemies. This volume is a collaborative effort, wherein the first five chapters are arranged chronologically, and the sixth revises the conventional picture of a devastated Germany. The book is based on numerous secondary sources and published documents, focused on political and diplomatic history, with short but interesting sections on the social, cultural, and economic aspects of the war. It is a tight knit narrative of many threads--political, military, and diplomatic events--resulting in a balanced overview without confusing the reader with the complexities
Household accounts and disbursement books of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, 1558-1561, 1584-1586 by Robert Dudley( Book )

14 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and held by 462 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Robert Dudley, the first Earl of Leicester, was a leading figure at the court of Elizabeth I, and this book presents a scholarly edition of both his two surviving household accounts (from 1558 to 1581), and the fragments of his disbursement books (from 1584 to 1586). The work also includes an appendix of those lists of household servants that have survived. This is the only collection of such information available for such a prominent member of the Elizabethan court, and as such provides numerous valuable insights into the personal finances of members of the Elizabethan aristocracy. It will thus be essential reading for any serious scholar of the high politics of the Elizabethan period
Religion, politics, and society in sixteenth-century England( Book )

6 editions published between 2003 and 2008 in English and held by 395 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This collection of hitherto unpublished material sheds important light on the English court and its relationship with a wider political society in the sixteenth century. The 'Journall' of political events covering 1547-52 and 1559-1562, possibly by the 'commonwealth man' John Hayles, offers arresting insights on court politics, foreign affairs and events in the life of London. It is published alongside a related account of the rivalry between the Dukes of Somerset and Northumberland. Court religious ceremonial is illustrated through an edition of regulations for the royal chapel. The memoir of Jean Malliet, sent to England to solicit a loan for the beleaguered city of Geneva in 1582-3, demonstrates the 'Calvinist international' at work. A tranche of letters from Sir Robert Cecil to Sir Christopher Hatton offers fresh material on court politics in this period
