The algorithmic beauty of plants by Przemyslaw Prusinkiewicz( Book )

28 editions published between 1990 and 2004 in English and Undetermined and held by 741 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is the first comprehensive volume on the computer simulation of plant development. It contains a full account of the algorithms used to model plant shapes and developmental processes, Lindenmayer systems in particular. With nearly 50 color plates, the spectacular results of the modelling are vividly illustrated. "This marvelous book will occupy an important place in the scientific literature." #Professor Heinz-Otto Peitgen# "The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants will perform a valuable service by popularizing this enlightening and bewitching form of mathematics." #Steven Levy# " ... the garden here is full of delights and an excellent introduction to L-systems ..." #Alvy Ray Smith, IEEE Computer Graphics and its Applications#

2 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The theory of formal languages is one of the oldest branches of theoretical computer science. Its original aim (in the fifties and sixties) was to clarify the laws and algorithms that underlie the definition and compilation of programming languages. Since then, formal language theory has changed very much. Today it includes mathematical topics like combinatorics of words, word equations, and coding theory, but it also covers connections to linguistics (for example, the study of contextual grammars), new computational paradigms (like DNA computing), and a wide range of applications, among them hypertext processing, database theory, and formal program verification. Many of these themes of modern formal language theory are represented in this volume
Lindenmayer systems, fractals, and plants by Przemyslaw Prusinkiewicz( Book )

4 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Lindenmayer Systems are a mathematical formalism which was proposed by Aristid Lindenmayer in 1968 as a foundation for an axiomatic theory of development. This book presents the application of Lindenmayer Systems and Fractal Geometry to graphics-based plant modelling, a fascinating approach to visualizing growth functions in plants. For life scientists, mathematicians and computer scientists alike, this book will provide a unique and stimulating view at an interdisciplinary field of science
Grammars of development : discrete state models for growth, differentiation, and gene expression in modular organisms by Aristid Lindenmayer( Book )

2 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Lindenmayer systems : impacts on theoretical computer science, computer graphics, and developmental biology by Grzegorz Rozenberg( Book )

1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

L systems are language-theoretic models for developmental biology. They wereintroduced in 1968 by Aristid Lindenmayer (1925-1989) and have proved to be among the most beautiful examples of interdisciplinary science, where work in one area induces fruitful ideas and results in other areas. L systemsare based on relational and set-theoretic concepts, which are more suitable for the discrete and combinatorial structures of biology than mathematical models based on calculus or statistics. L systems have stimulated new work not only in the realistic simulation of developing organisms but also in the theory of automata and formal languages, formal power series, computer graphics, and combinatorics of words. This book contains research papers by almost all leading authorities and by many of the most promising young researchers in the field. The 28 contributions are organized in sections on basic L systems, computer graphics, graph grammars and map L systems, biological aspects and models, and variations and generalizations of L systems. The introductory paper by Lindenmayer and J}rgensen was written for a wide audience and is accessible to the non-specialist reader. The volume documents the state of the art in the theory of L systems and their applications. It will interest researchers and advanced students in theoretical computer science and developmental biology as well as professionals in computer graphics
Developments in language theory : at the crossroads of mathematics, computer science, and biology : Turku, Finland, 12-15 July 1993( )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This proceedings volume provides a modern synopsis of recent studies concerning certain areas of language theory very close to applications. The topics covered range from image generation and developmental models to combinatorics of words and formal power series, as well as from fractals to computational complexity. Although the contributions represent ongoing research, much of the material is accessible to a reader with only a moderate previous knowledge of the subject."--Publisher's website
