This research paper summarises some of the findings and discussion of a 1984 report, Part time work and youth in transition, prepared by the Research Section of the Institute. The major findings of this study indicate that part time work is particularly suited to young people attending school and is more likely to be undertaken by students from high socioeconomic family backgrounds and with high educational and occupational aspirations. The study suggests that part time work, if it is to contribute more effectively to the transition of young people from youth to adulthood, needs to be structured along lines which facilitate the long term occupational career and social development of young people

Skipping School. an Examination of Truancy in Victorian Secondary Schools. Research Report by Garry Coventry( Book )

1 edition published in 1984 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A longitudinal study of 2,378 secondary school students from 26 schools in Australia's Victoria State provided data clarifying the nature, extent, causes, and consequences of truancy. School records, a survey of the principals of 501 secondary schools, and records of the criminal justice system provided additional data. The longitudinal study involved collection of data in 1980, when the students surveyed were in their ninth school year, and followup surveys conducted in 1981 and 1983. The research on truancy examined (1) the incidence, distribution, and patterns of truant behavior; (2) school and student variables accounting for truancy patterns; (3) relationships between truant characteristics and school responses to truancy; (4) the links between truancy and delinquency; and (5) relationships between respondents' truant behavior and their experiences after compulsory schooling. This report's seven chapters cover (1) an introduction to truancy and the study; (2) the study methodology; (3) a theoretical model of truancy based on a review of the literature; (4) an examination of the scope of Victoria's truancy problem; (5) the patterns of behavior relating truancy, delinquency, and employment; (6) results of testing the truancy model; and (7) current Victorian school truancy policies and possible new directions. Part-Time Work and Youth in Transition. Research Report by Garry Coventry( Book )

1 edition published in 1984 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A longitudinal study of 2,378 Australian teenagers from their ninth year in school in 1980 until 1983 provided data on the significance of part-time employment in young people's transition from school to the world of work. Those studied were attending 26 different secondary schools in Australia's Victoria State in 1980 when data were first collected. Many had left school by 1981 and 1983 when subsequent data collections were made. Interviews were conducted in 1983 with 30 of those surveyed and with 48 other secondary students as well. The study considered part-time youth employment in the light of the potentially interrelated influences of family, school, and work, other economic and social forces, and the social and personal development of young people as well. The purpose was to generate information that could assist in youth policy development. Six basic areas were investigated: the nature of part-time work undertaken by youths; the characteristics of young part-time workers; the reasons young people work; and the impact of part-time work on career development, social and personal development, and school-to-work transition. The report discusses the study methodology, the study results, and implications of the findings. (Pgd)
