A static treatment is given of the seismic signal from nuclear explosions in overdriven cavities, with particular attention to the role of incipient tension. When the elastic limits are exceeded, the seismic signal is larger than a purely elastic treatment would imply. This enhancement, however, grows relatively slowly with overdrive under certain circumstances. (Author)

Use of bacteria in subsurface remediation shows great promise. A number of technical problems the use of bacteria require further investigation. The physics and chemistry of the movement of bacteria in the heterogenous subsurface is poorly understood. A novel concept that needs further work is to use resident microorganisms and to transmit only the new genetic instructions from the surface. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) in 1985 established the Subsurface Science Program. The primary purpose of this program is to assist DOE's efforts to clean up wastes that have been disposed of underground and that have moved from surface sites into the underground. While the mining and petroleum companies have carried out extensive operations in the subsurface, the physics, chemistry, and particularly, the biology of the subsurface environment are largely unknown. In Section 2, we present our overall view of the program, its major goals, and outstanding issues. In general, this is a high-quality program, and deserves continuing and increasing support. The problem of understanding the subsurface environment in such a way as to make bioremediation a useful alternative is highly challenging. The subsurface environment is characterized by great natural physical and biological heterogeneity. This heterogeneity is discussed in Sections 2, 3, and 6. The complexity of natural heterogeneity is a theme running throughout the report. Methods to describe the heterogeneity in a useful way must be developed

A procedure described earlier for bounding laddergraph scattering amplitudes is applied here to two models: exchange of pairs of scalar particles (bubbles), and exchange of vector particles. The forward-scattering absorptive amplitudes are bounded from above. Apart from logarithmic factors, the correct amplitudes are known to grow with energy like S alpha, and our results determine upper bounds on the exponents alpha. For case where the exchanged particles are massless, our upper bounds in fact coincide with the exact results for alpha as given in the literature. (Author)

JASON has now conducted two studies on the use of small satellites and remotely-piloted aircraft (RPAs) in global change research, with special reference to the DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program and to DARPA's Small Satellite program. The studies centered around meetings, one in January and the other in June, 1991, to which we invited representatives of all areas of the global change program and of the DOD satellite science and technology community. We have already issued a report on the January study. Here we summarize the main themes and results of our Summer Study; the full report will be issued shortly
