While excavating on the estate of the Count of Noyon, workmen unearth a huge box. The count, his friend, Seville and a Brahmin priest open the box, finding a glass coffin containing the body of a young Indian Princess. The priest reveals that the Princess is not dead, but sleeping, and he awakens her. The Count and Seville both fall in love with her, but she prefers the Count, making Seville very jealous. Seville arranges to kidnap her. The Princess is rescued, and Seville is mortally wounded in a duel with the Count. Meanwhile, the Count's fiancé, Marguerita, returns from a long journey and is dismayed to find that she is no longer loved by the Count. The priest, realizing that the Princess is bringing unhappiness, hypnotizes her and returns her to the glass coffin and "the peace of Brahma". The Count and Marguerita are reunited
