L'Esprit nouveau : Purism in Paris, 1918-1925 by Carol S Eliel( Book )

"The Purist movement in art, founded by Charles-Edouard Jeanneret (better known as Le Corbusier) and Amedee Ozenfant, championed a traditional classicism with a formal focus on clean geometries while it simultaneously embraced new technologies and materials. Realized equally in painting and in architecture, Purism also incorporated interior and industrial design and urban planning. The periodical L'Esprit Nouveau, founded by Ozenfant and Jeanneret in 1920, served as the mouthpiece for the Purist movement; the diverse subject matter addressed in the magazine reflected the wide-ranging interests of the Purists." "Published to accompany a major exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, L'Esprit Nouveau: Purism in Paris, 1918-1925 is the first major study of Purism in almost fifteen years and a key contribution to the study of classic twentieth-century modernism in painting and architecture. This revealing volume examines over seventy-five paintings by Jeanneret, Ozenfant, and their closest colleague, Fernand Leger. Also included is the full text of Le Corbusier's and Ozenfant's 1918 manifesto, Apres Je cubisme, translated for the first time into English. At the heart of L'Esprit Nouveau: Purism in Paris, 1918-1925 lies a single work: Le Corbusier's striking Pavillon de l'Esprit Nouveau, designed for the 1925 International Exposition of Decorative Arts in Paris, at which the term Art Deco was coined. The architecture of Le Corbusier's pavilion, along with its interior decoration - paintings, sculpture, furniture, glassware, rugs, and other objects - offers a complete summation of Purist aesthetics."--Jacket

"The pioneering artist László Moholy-Nagy (1894-1946) worked across a range of art forms including painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, film, advertising, and theater. This publication, which offers a fresh and extensive examination of his output, accompanies the first major American survey of Moholy's oeuvre in nearly a half century and represents the most extensive English-language book on the artist in thirty years. The catalogue reproduces a vast selection of Moholy's early paintings and photograms, his whimsical photomontages--all of which are reproduced together here for the first time--and late works in Plexiglas. Distinguished scholars offer new insights into his materials and working methods; the relation among writing, administration, and art making in his practice; and his influence on contemporary art. Particular emphasis is given to Moholy's American years and his leadership of the Chicago Bauhaus as well as his reception as a painter"--

John Altoon by Carol S Eliel( Book )

6 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This first major book on John Altoon, a legendary figure of the Los Angeles art scene in the 1960s, examines the artist's work not only in the context of his peers but also considers his resonance for later generations of artists. Renowned as much for his charismatic and mercurial personality as for his vibrant and visceral drawings and paintings, John Altoon is perhaps the least familiar of all the original Ferus Gallery (Los Angeles) artists--a group that included Robert Irwin, Edward Kienholz, Ken Price, and Ed Ruscha. Published to coincide with the first major Altoon retrospective, this book includes works that demonstrate the constant interplay between figuration and abstraction in his oeuvre, as well as the artist's facility with line and color. Dynamic and often erotically charged, the drawings and paintings are intimately connected--Altoon's exuberant canvases both respond to and inform the primal energy of his works on paper. This book includes photographs of many previously undocumented works as well as a historical and contextual essay, a distinctive text by artist Paul McCarthy, and brief statements by Monica Majoli, Monique Prieto, Laura Owens, and Barbara T. Smith"-

"The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents Helen Pashgian: Light Invisible, the first solo presentation of the Los Angeles-based Light and Space artist at a major museum. The exhibition debuts a new large-scale work comprised of 12 two-part columns framed out of molded acrylic, made specifically for LACMA's presentation. As viewers walk past, around, and between these columnar forms, the sculpture creates an immersive viewing experience that invites meditations on the nature of materials and light."--Publisher's website
