The initial chapters of Jefferson's Library were classified under the category of History. These ranged from Ancient History to contemporary American History. It was clear from Jefferson's viewpoint that the section would then logically address the history of the earth as well. Chapters 6-14 cover Natural History, including the hard and the applied sciences such as Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, Anatomy, Zoology, Botany, and Mineralogy. (Interestingly, astronomy and physics are treated as Philosophy in Jefferson's organizational scheme.) It is here that Jefferson's role as one of the leading intellectual and scientific lights of North America becomes evident. Vast sections of his science holdings are gifts from authors, anxious to hear Mr. Jefferson's reactions. In several instances, Jefferson strikes up an engaging and productive correspondence with scientists and inventors. He corresponded with Joseph Priestly regarding Phlogiston, and with others concerning Antoine Lavoisier's discoveries

In 1692, Louis XIV, ordered a new series of types to be used exclusively by the Imprimerie Royale and Grandjean was chosen to design them. They were marked as royal fonts by a little projection on the left of the shank of the lower case "l". Updike says: "The best of Grandjean's romain du roi fonts were employed in a magnificent folio, Medailles ... 1702." An example of luxurious and elegant printing; each page, being enclosed in a decorative border, looks as if it had been engraved. Four medals have been supplied from other books on pages, 16, 91, 180 and 197

2 editions published in 1824 in French and held by 47 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The name of Jean-Fran ois Champollion (1790-1832) will always be associated with the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Champollion himself was a child prodigy who had taught himself numerous ancient languages in his teenage years, despite not having received any formal education. In this 1824 work, he expands on the discoveries he had previously outlined in 1822, giving a long and systematic account of his research, which was based on the insight of Thomas Young that clusters of hieroglyphs on the tri-lingual Rosetta Stone could be matched to known Greek and Latin names. He gave phonetic values to the signs, and then linked them to the Coptic language (familiar from its use in the liturgy of the Coptic Christian Church in Egypt), which he recognised as being descended from ancient Egyptian. The work was originally published in two volumes (the second being of illustrations), which are here bound as one
