Abraham Verplanck was one of the early Dutch immigrants from Holland to New Amsterdam, New York. He married Maria Vigne in 1630, and the family subsequently became quite wealthy and properous. Gulian Verplanck (b.1786), a direct descendant, married Eliza Fenno in 1811, and was active in city, state and national politics. He was also a prominent lawyer in the city, and served as the first president of the Century Club
