Gerard Manley Hopkins and the Victorian visual world by Catherine Phillips( )

12 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 1,738 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The first of eight volumes of Hopkins's Collected Works to be published, Oxford Essays and Notes presents a remarkable cache of previously unpublished papers, including forty-five essays which Hopkins produced during his undergraduate career at Oxford (1863-1867), only seven of which were reproduced in the 1959 edition of Journals and Papers. Topics range from Platonic philosophy to theories of the imagination, from ancient history to then-contemporary politics and voting rights. Also included are notes from a commonplace book, a remarkable 'dialogue' about aesthetics (featuring a fictionalized John Ruskin figure), and the lecture notes Hopkins prepared in the winter of 1868 while teaching at John Henry Newman's Oratory School in Birmingham - writings in which he explores, for the first time, the theories of inscape and instress so central to his poetic practice. The edition is fully annotated and provides a detailed introduction that situates historically Hopkins's academic and creative efforts."--Jacket
Gerard Manley Hopkins by Gerard Manley Hopkins( Book )

23 editions published between 1986 and 1995 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,161 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Between the end of his study of theology in 1877 and the respite of his tertianship in 1881 he held seven different posts up and down the country from London and Oxford to Liverpool and Glasgow. The final five years of his life were spent in Ireland as Professor of Greek and Latin Literature in the newly formed Catholic University College, Dublin. Here he was beset by overwork, distress at Irish hatred of England, and most of all, despite writing a number of poems now considered among his very best, by the growing conviction that he could not accomplish any literary work of recognized value. He died of typhoid in June 1889

Robert Bridges : a biography by Catherine Phillips( Book )

10 editions published in 1992 in English and Undetermined and held by 454 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Robert Bridges is best known today for having been the editor and champion of his friend Gerard Manley Hopkins, and comparatively little attention has been paid to his own life and work. In this, the first full-length biography of Bridges, Catherine Phillips seeks to redress the balance by focusing on Bridges' long and full life, and on his achievements as a poet and literary commentator. Born in 1844, Bridges lived through the social and cultural upheavals of the First World War and its aftermath. Having trained and practised as a doctor, he published influential critical essays and several volumes of verse culminating in 1929 with publication of The Testament of Beauty, a hugely successful book-length poem. He experimented with verse forms and was interested in orthography and etymology, co-founding the Society for Pure English in 1913, the same year in which he was appointed Poet Laureate. Bridges' fascination with developments in science, philosophy, psychology, music and literature led to friendships with figures such as Roger Fry, W.B. Yeats, George Santayana, and Hopkins. Bridges' perspective throws new light on their characters and attitudes. Drawing on previously unpublished material and family archives, Catherine Phillips reveals a far more complex and troubled man than has been thought, and paints in addition a portrait of an age in transition

The major works by Gerard Manley Hopkins( Book )

4 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 275 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This authoritative edition was originally published in the acclaimed Oxford Authors series under the general editorship of Frank Kermode. It brings together all Hopkins's poetry and a generous selection of his prose writings to give the essence of his work and thinking. Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-89) was one of the most innovative of nineteenth-century poets. During his tragically short life he strove to reconcile his religious and artistic vocations, and this edition demonstrates the range of his interests. It includes all his poetry, from best-known works such as 'The Wreck of the Deutschland' and "The Windhover' to translations, foreign language poems, plays, and verse fragments, and the recently discovered poem 'Consule Jones'. In addition there are excerpts from Hopkins's journals, letters, and spiritual writings. The poems are printed in chronological order to show Hopkins's changing preoccupations, and all the texts have been established from original manuscripts
