The Culture of print : power and the uses of print in early modern Europe by Roger Chartier( )

19 editions published between 1987 and 2014 in English and held by 1,521 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The leading historians who are the authors of this work offer a highly original account of one of the most important transformations in Western culture: the change brought about by the discovery and development of printing in Europe. Focusing primarily on printed matter other than books, The Culture of Print emphasizes the specific and local contexts in which printed materials, such as broadsheets, flysheets, and posters, were used in modern Europe. The authors show that festive, ritual, cultic, civic, and pedagogic uses of print were social activities that involved deciphering texts in a collective way, with those who knew how to read leading those who did not. Only gradually did these collective forms of appropriation give way to a practice of reading--privately, silently, using the eyes alone--that has become common today. This wide-ranging work opens up new historical and methodological perspectives and will become a focal point of debate for historians and sociologists interested in the cultural transformations that accompanied the rise of modern societies."--Publisher's description

Kantorowicz : stories of a historian by Alain Boureau( Book )

26 editions published between 1990 and 2001 in 4 languages and held by 415 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ernst Kantorowicz was a complex figure whose long incident-filled life seemed to embody many of the contradictions of the twentieth century. A Jew from a disputed area between Germany and Poland who fought on the German side in World War I, he first achieved academic success with Frederick II (1927), a work whose language, in Gabrielle Spiegel's words, "often came perilously close to that of the Nazi party" in its desire to see a reconstituted German nation once again dominant on the world stage. Forced to emigrate when the Nazis came to power, Kantorowicz later became embroiled in controversy when, at Berkeley during the McCarthy era, he refused to sign an oath of allegiance designed to identify Communist Party sympathizers
Satan the heretic : the birth of demonology in medieval west by Alain Boureau( Book )

16 editions published between 2006 and 2014 in English and held by 413 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Before the end of the thirteenth century, theologians had little interest in demons, but with Thomas Aquinas and his formidable "Treatise on Evil" in 1272, everything changed. In Satan the Heretic, Alain Boureau trains his skeptical eye not on Satan or Satanism, but on the birth of demonology and the sudden belief in the power of demons who inhabited Satan's Court, setting out to understand not why people believed in demons, but why theologians - especially Pope John XXII - became so interested in the subject."--BOOK JACKET

Correspondence : models of letter-writing from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century by Roger Chartier( Book )

12 editions published in 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 326 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this new book, Roger Chartier and his associates explore the history of a cultural practice that has become common and widespread: the writing of letters. They begin by examining the invention of norms for writing letters in the Middle Ages, and the fixing of these norms in popular manuals of various kinds. They then analyse the letterwriting models developed in the ancien regimes, showing how these models were linked to court literature, on the one hand, and to the popular books distributed by pedlars, on the other. Finally, they discuss the models of letter-writing developed during the nineteenth century. The nineteenth century, they argue, was a decisive period in the history of letter-writing, partly because of the rapid rise in rates of literacy and partly due to broader social and economic transformations which increased the need for writing letters
