Canada, a North American nation by Paul W Bennett( Book )

8 editions published between 1988 and 2004 in English and held by 61 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book has emerged as the most popular textbook in academic high schools across Canada. Those six years have produced remarkable changes. Since 1989, the Soviet Union has dissovled and the Cold War has come to an end. Canada and the United States have entered into a free-trade agreement and fully embrace globalization within a new international economic order. In this changing global context, Canada was described as a postmodern, borderless state where global culture seemed to be transcending traditional national loyalties. Questions were raised

The last stand : schools, communities and the future of rural Nova Scotia by Paul W Bennett( Book )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 51 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The hour is late and the clock is ticking for rural and small town communities in Nova Scotia. School closures capture the news headlines, but they signal a more profound development: the gradual, yet relentless, decline in rural populations and a demographic shift that threatens to extinguish what remains of rural communities in Nova Scotia. In The Last Stand, Paul W. Bennett responds to the looming crisis with a new, more accountable, efficient and sustainable model of public schooling. It is time to revitalize rural Nova Scotian communities by reversing the dominant trend toward centralized, bureaucratic school systems. As Bennett argues, schools must be transformed, once again, into vital community hubs. Suspending the divisive school review process will accomplish little, as Bennett demonstrates, unless it leads to building smaller community schools, supporting innovative local enterprises, modelling sustainable living practices and providing community-based education on a more human scale

Reclaiming at-risk children and youth : a review of Nova Scotia's SchoolsPlus (ISD) initiative by Paul W Bennett( )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The SchoolsPlus program found its origins in a key recommendation of Nova Scotia Justice Merlin Nunn's landmark 2006 report, Spiralling Out of Control which then found its way into Our Kids Are Worth It, the much heralded 2007 strategy to close the gaps in front-line support services ... This comprehensive research report demonstrates that, while SchoolsPlus (SP) is a worthwhile provincial integrated services delivery (ISD) initiative, it is in need of a 'mid-term correction' to ensure its ultimate success and reach its target population, the 5 to 10 per cent of children and youth at risk of going off-the rails"--Executive summary
Picking up the pieces : a community-school-based approach to First Nations education renewal by Paul W Bennett( )

3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

First Nations Education has been the focus of a great deal of controversy and discussion in recent months. The latest proposed "solution" put forth in Bill C-33 was built around an enhanced federal financial contribution. The bill was, however, ultimately rejected by many first nations and subsequently abandoned by the government. This book demonstrates why the education reform proposed in Bill C-33 missed the mark. More money in the form of increased capital funding might have brought modest gains to on-reserve schooling, but replacing one bureaucracy with another rarely changes the state of education or improves the quality of student learning at the school or community level

After the Healing : Safeguarding Northern Nishnawbe First Nations High School Education by Paul W Bennett( )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A Thunder Bay coroner’s inquest report into the deaths of seven First Nations students, issued on June 28, 2016, has motivated new public calls for concrete, meaningful changes in Indigenous education, particularly in Northern Ontario. The new report by Paul W. Bennett, takes a look at the history of First Nations education and analyzes and assesses the impact of First Nations-controlled high schools on the educational progress, well-being, and life chances of youth in the Nishnawbe Aski Nation. By taking a closer look at the real challenges and hard-won successes of two Northern Nishnawbe Education Council (NNEC) schools, Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School (DFCHS) in Thunder Bay, and its sister school, Pelican Lake First Nations High School (PFFNHS) near Sioux Lookout, Bennett makes several policy recommendations, including the call for a full transition to First Nations control of education through Community- School Based Management, entrusted in Indigenous education authorities such as NNEC." -- https://www.northernpolicy.ca/afterthehealing
