The Halutz Resistance in Hungary, 1942-1944 by Asher Cohen( Book )

19 editions published between 1983 and 1986 in 3 languages and held by 412 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Zionist youth movements in Hungary, mainly in Busapest, became active in assistance to Jewish refugees in 1942, after an influx of refugees from Slovakia. The Vaadat ha-Ezra ve-ha-Hatzalah, formed in 1943, was eventually led by Slovakians, because of the conscription of Hungarian men into the military forced labor battalions. In autumn 1943 there was a wave of Polish refugees; those who had been members of Zionist youth movements aided in resistance activities, which included providing "Aryan" identity papers, planning escapes from ghettos, and smuggling Jews into Romania. In October 1944, when ca. 80,000 Jewish women were sent on death marches, the Zionist resistance set up children's homes and provided for thousands of children. Their headquarters, in the "glass house" set up by the Swiss consulate, protected ca. 2,000 Jews. In addition, they issued ca. 100,000 false "protective passes, " thereby saving thousands of Jews

Persécutions et sauvetages : Juifs et Français sous l'Occupation et sous Vichy by Asher Cohen( Book )

9 editions published in 1993 in French and held by 196 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Examines the segregation of the Jews from French society, including the Aryanization policy, the creation of French concentration camps, the roundups and deportations of Jews to the East, and the resistance movement in France. Surveys both French institutions dealing with the "Jewish question" and French-Jewish organizations (e.g. UGIF). Concludes that 80,000 Jews were deported from France and murdered, while about 250,000 survived the war. Focuses on French public opinion which, in great part, opposed antisemitism. The reactions against the persecutions by Resistance journals and the Church authorities in southern France were influential in contributing to the relatively small number of Jews deported from France compared to other countries. Stresses that both rescue activities and public opinion influenced the fate of the Jews in France

Toldot ha-Shoʼah : Tsarefat by Asher Cohen( Book )

3 editions published in 1996 in Hebrew and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Discusses the effects of German and Vichy rule in wartime France, with its ca. 300,000 Jews, half of whom were recent immigrants. The effectiveness of anti-Jewish legislation in both areas depended, to a large extent, on French public opinion. From fall 1940 until summer 1942, thousands of Jews who did not have French citizenship were deported to concentration camps (mainly in southern France), and Jewish property was Aryanized. The Commissariat General aux Questions Juives, established by the Germans, supported the Aryanization which was carried out very efficiently. However, the fact that most of the French population opposed the deportations made it more difficult for the Germans, and easier for the Jews to execute rescue plans; ca. three-quarters of the Jews in France survived. Discusses, also, the situation of the Jews in Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco, countries which were directly or indirectly under French rule

Israel and the politics of Jewish identity : the secular-religious impasse by Asher Cohen( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Since the 1980s, relationships between secular and religious Israelis have gone from bad to worse. What was formerly a politics of accommodation, one whose main objective was the avoidance of strife through "arrangements" and compromises, has become a winner-take-all, zero-sum game. The conflict is not over who gets what. Rather, it is a conflict over the very character of the polity, a struggle to define Israel's collective character. In Israel and the Politics of Jewish Identity Asher Cohen and Bernard Susser show how this transformation has been caused by structural changes in Israel's public sphere. Surveying many different levels of public life, they explore the change of Israel's politics from a dominant-party system to a balanced two-camp system. They trace the rise of the Haredi parties and the growing consonance of religiosity with right-wing politics."--Jacket
