Film actress and tap dancer Jeni LeGon was born on August 14, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois. As a child, LeGon attended Mary Bruce's School of Dance. At age thirteen, she joined the Count Basie Orchestra's chorus line and became a professional dancer. Dancing with the Whitman Sisters troupe in 1931, LeGon formed a tap duo with her half-sister and was discovered by Hollywood. Her twenty-four film credits include: Hooray for Love, Broadway Melody of 1936, This Was Paris, Fools for Scandal, Arabian Nights, Stormy Weather, Hi De Ho and Bright Road. She returned to the screen in 2001 with Snoop Dogg in Bones. In 1969, she opened her own dance studio in Vancouver, British Columbia. LeGon is the recipient of many awards. In 1999 the National Film Board of Canada released Grant Greshuk's prize-winning documentary, Jeni LeGon: Living in a Great Big Way. LeGon passed away on December 7, 2012 at age 96

Profile of African-American tap dancer, singer, and actor Jeni LeGon, whose illustrious career included numerous Hollywood films, stage shows, television, and tours in the U.S. and abroad. As a dancer, she rivaled the feats of male performers such as the Nicholas Brothers, and performed with tap dancing legend Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. In Hollywood, she became one of the first African-American entertainers under contract to MGM. The program contains clips from many of her films and musicals, among them Hooray for love, Fools for scandal, Ali Baba goes to town, Sundown, Somebody loves me, Double deal, and Hi de ho. While discussing her achievements, LeGon also recalls the racism she encountered both in professional and private life. In her later career, she became an inspirational and beloved teacher first in Los Angeles, where she opened her own school, then in Vancouver, where she now resides
