Human rights, human dignity, and cosmopolitan ideals : essays on critical theory and human rights by Matthias Lutz-Bachmann( )

20 editions published between 2014 and 2016 in English and held by 1,212 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book makes a significant contribution to the on-going international dialogue on the meaning of concepts such as human rights, humanity, and cosmopolitanism. The authors propose a new agenda for research into a Critical Theory of Human Rights. Each chapter pursues three goals: to reconstruct modern philosophical theories that have contributed to our views on human rights; to highlight the importance of humanity and human dignity as a complementary dimension to liberal rights; and, finally, to integrate these issues more directly in contemporary discussions about cosmopolitanism. The authors not only present multicultural perspectives on how to rethink political and international theory in terms of the normativity of human rights, but also promote an international dialogue on the prospects for a critical theory of human rights discourses in the 21st century

Metaphysics in the twelfth century : on the relationship among philosophy, science, and theology( Book )

16 editions published between 2002 and 2004 in 3 languages and held by 197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Although metaphysics as a discipline can hardly be separated from Aristotle and his works, the questions it raises were certainly known to authors even before the reception of Aristotle in the thirteenth century. Even without the explicit use of this term the twelfth century manifested a strong interest in metaphysical questions under the guise of "natural philosophy" or "divine science", leading M.-D. Chenu to coin the expression of the twelfth-century "eveil metaphysique". In their commentaries on Boethius and under the influence of Neoplatonism, twelfth century authors not only anticipate essential elements of thirteenth century metaphysics, they also make an original contribution to the history of metaphysics by attempting to integrate the theory of first principles, philosophical theology and ontology. This volume presents and examines the contributions of the twelfth century to metaphysics made by selected Jewish, Christian and Muslim authors of the Iberian Peninsula and Francia."--Jacket

Erkenntnis und Wissenschaft : Probleme der Epistemologie in der Philosophie des Mittelalters = Knowledge and science : problems of epistemology in medieval philosophy by Matthias Lutz-Bachmann( Book )

10 editions published between 2004 and 2009 in German and English and held by 106 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Review quote. A quote from a review of the product: "Deutlich wollen sämtliche Beiträge nicht etwa das sonst so weit verbreitete Cliché einer theorieverstiegenen Scholastik bedienen, sonder die praktischen Implikationen mittelalterlicher scholastischer Wissenschaftsbemühungen in den Blick nehmen.
