From madrigal to modern music : a guide to musical styles by Douglas Moore( Book )

35 editions published between 1942 and 2000 in 4 languages and held by 1,764 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book transports the reader into the spirit of great music, so that when he encounters an unfamiliar composition he will feel at home in its style and will have some idea of what to expect. It examines five great periods-the Renaissance, Baroque, Classic, Romantic, and Modern-and teaches him the technique of listening so that he can identify the style and form of a piece of music and place it in its proper period. For unless our ears can tell us the difference between a fugue and a sonata, the study of names, dates and historical trends will be futile

The ballad of Baby Doe : opera in two acts by Douglas Moore( )

21 editions published between 1955 and 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 707 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This vocal score was owned and likely used by conductor Emerson Buckley to prepare for the world premiere of The ballad of Baby Doe, July 7, 1956, in Central City, Colorado. This early version varies from the final New York version of 1958, most notably with the inclusion of "Out of the darkness" (Act 1, Scene 2) and "Wake snakes" (Act 2, Scene 1) and the later added "Poker scene" lacking. Act 2, Scene 2 (i.e. Scene 3 in New York version) was altered and reordered significantly for the final version
